Moosedog, my guys are golden/yellow lab mix also.  Jake looks more like a lab with the flat head and the longer coat with yellow coloring.  Buddy looks very much like the picture of your guy - more red/golden coloring, shorter coat, and his head is shaped so funny - I call him lightbulb head!  In your picture he looks a lot like Buddy.  Buddy takes after his dad (so I'm told - never met him) he's stocky - weighs about 95 - 100 pounds.

I work with a lady who raises and shows bassets.  She said bathing them with Palmolive dish soap (has to be the original green formula) kills flees on contact.  I asked if it was drying to the dogs skin and she said not as long as you get it completely rinsed out.  I'm going to try it on my guys tonight unless any of you know why that would be a bad idea.

Buddy is a real talker  (I totally know what you mean by "wookie"!)  He also talks back!  If my husband is telling him to do something and buddy doesn't want to, he will bark a very sassy bark!!    Also, if we bother him, like make him move over on the bed so I'm not hanging off the side, he'll let out a big sigh.  He's so funny.  Jake doesn't talk much unless someone is walking by the front of the house, then he sounds really tough.
