Medical Conditions & Diseases / eye infections from dog beach?
« on: March 11, 2006, 06:12:43 pm »
Lucas has recently been getting bouts of conjunctivitis which we have been treating with an ointment. I am noticing they flare up the morning after he goes swimming in the ocean(we go to dog beach in Del Mar). Has anyone else had this problem? I feel badly because they love swimming and playing with the other dogs, but we can no longer go there.  :(

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Easy Walk harness--update!
« on: March 11, 2006, 01:55:02 pm »
A few days ago I had asked about Gentle Leader making a harness. Well we bought one for Lucas and I am so thrilled with the results! I used to dread walking him because he would pull me down the sidewalk, choking the entire way. Using this harness is like flipping a switch. He immediately stopped pulling and we just WALKED. After our first test run he was so happy...I think he likes it as much as I do. I can take him anywhere now! Whoever invented this thing deserves a medal!!!  :D

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Gentle Leader harness
« on: March 04, 2006, 06:12:20 pm »
I heard somewhere...ma ybe here that gentle leader makes a harness. I have not seen this in any stores near me and am interested in hearing any success stories people have had. I've tried halti and a regular gentle leader but they both fought it so much...they hate it(not to mention Daisy ate the GL  ::))
I think a gentle leader style harness would be a perfect compromise.
Has anyone used this?

I was looking at the Riverside shelter website and saw so many dogs that are scheduled to be euthanized, some today.  :'(

It's so sad.

Well, we are going to have to crate train Daisy.  :-\ For months I had been taking them to work, which was great, but I switched jobs. We talked about crate training but since Chip works part time out of the house, and part time at the office, he would take them to work so they could go to the dog park during lunch. It seemed like a better solution because they get attention and exercise periodically throughout the day. In the past couple of weeks, Daisy has torn up the back of my fairly new suv.  ???
She ripped up the carpet, chewed up the center consol and seat belts and god knows what else...Chip called today and told me it was the worst yet.
So I am now going to do what people have told me to do for so long and buy her a crate(she chews holes in the walls of our house when left alone so this is our only option).
Should we get one for Luke as well? He doesn't chew, or shred like she does. He just sleeps all the time. I'm afraid if we don't, she'll freak out because he's "free" and she's not. Does anyone have one dog crated and another not crated? This is new territory for me.

I received an email from the woman I got my puppies from about free retriever puppies. It was originally posted on the 13th of this month. How can I get this info out to all of you with pics of the litter? It said that if they are not adopted out they will be put down!  ???
I have the owner's email but don't think it's appropriate to just post on a forum website. What should i do? They are so adorable....I want everyone to see this incase something can be done.

Mixed Breed Pictures / The cute and snuggly side of Daisy
« on: February 15, 2006, 04:03:44 pm »
It's rare when we can take Daisy pics cause she's always on the go! Sorry these aren't the best quality but time is limited to catch her in a still moment.

Transporting & Traveling With Dogs / Road-Trippin' with TeamShredit
« on: February 03, 2006, 06:55:07 pm »
I can't believe its February already! What happened?
We are planning a month long road trip in June with stops in Seattle, Yellowstone, Ohio, New York, and various places in Ontario. We are driving, and taking the dogs. We're crazy...I know.  ::)

I have an SUV and the dogs have plenty of room, but I want to start compiling a list now, so we are not scrambling last minute to take care of details. Has anyone also traveled long distances with their dogs? Are there any good websites that list dog parks, pet friendly hotels...etc. I have a feeling this will have to be well planned in order to pull this one off without compromising their health and our sanity.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Daisy keeps eating grass
« on: January 31, 2006, 08:23:29 pm »
Lucas is our big paw but for some reason I'm always addressing Daisy issues. Today's issue is her health. For two days straight she has been almost obsessively eating grass and throwing it up, along with her food. She has horrible gas, but no signs of diarrhea. Now she doesn't want to eat either(she is playing and running around). It's seems like a stomach flu like people get. I work next door to the vet and will talk to him tomorrow, but was wondering if there is anything I can do to alleviate her illness? Should I be very concerned? They both have had little ailments here and there but I have not yet seen a dog make themselves throw up so frequently and it has me slightly worried.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Goofy submissive behavior...
« on: January 30, 2006, 03:54:33 pm »
Daisy has started acting really goofy around dominant dogs lately. About a month ago we visited friends up in Big Bear, who have a 2 year old female pit. Any time she and Daisy were near each other, Daisy would get down on one of her shoulders right in front of Kira and....it's hard to explain, but she'd walk around face first looking up at her. It was sooo weird! She wouldn't let Kira ignore her and kept shoving herself in her space in a submissive position.
Daisy also does this with Bubba, a male AmStaff. He's really mellow, but clearly the dominant of the two. She won't let him ignore her and just rolls around in front of him....like she's vacuuming the ground with her head. Has anyone else witnessed this behavior? It's seems like its only with dogs that don't like her....but it only agitates them even more, and has actually started fights because Luke will stick up for her when they growl warnings. But she starts it all.

Also, we have a cat living with us that tolerates Luke but hates Daisy, and Daisy has made it her lifelong goal to bark incessantly at this poor cat whenever he shows his face. It's like she's socially inept and doesn't understand how to keep her distance and lay low, which is how Luke behaves(although he's started to bark at him as well because of her). It all began the day GuyDude(the cat) was introduced to the puppies and he swatted at Daisy, who ran up to him and shoved her face in his. She won't let it go, and it's made his life very difficult. Is this a female dog trait?

I was hoping that when we moved to our new house Daisy would stop digging her way out of the yard. Everything was fine for about a month and then the neighbors behind us got a new puppy. Yay.

Now she gets out at least twice a day,(either to play with Hailey the puppy or just to wander around) and because our back fence is blocked by thick bushes we have to drive to the other side of the neighborhood to get her. I am so frustrated! We have no freedom anymore and constantly have to watch her when she goes out...I literally have to guard the bushes because if she gets through she's gone. The neighbor's have tried to block the holes she dug, we've tried filling them, nailing more boards up. It's gotten so bad I've run through complete strangers houses to grab her before she pees on their carpet(a WHOLE other story!). We can't afford to get a new fence, and Chip refuses to tear out the bushes, which run the entire length of the yard. I have no other choice but to keep her on a leash and walk her, which cuts her exercise way down(and Luke because they love to run together). Oh, and this is no longer just a fence issue. Two days ago, we decided to keep them at home for a couple hours while we did errands to see how they behave. After an unsuccessful attempt at breaking through the locked kitty door, Daisy started chewing through the wall to make her own door. AAAAAAGH! What am I doing wrong?  ???
Escaping has become routine, and I feel like she has all the control.
I think it's a game to her, because everytime I drive down the hill to pick her up she's so happy! She has this grin on her face like "ha ha I got out and had fun tearing up the neighborhood.. ..let's go home and do this again!!!"  How can we break this cycle? Has anyone else successfully stopped a runaway dog?
Sorry about the ranting and raving.....any thoughts on this matter would be much appreciated.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Preventing sunburn?
« on: January 20, 2006, 09:10:50 pm »
Luke's nose is black, but the surrounding skin has some pink and white splotches. He's out in the sun almost everyday(san diego sun), sometimes all day when we're working on the yard. Is regular sunblock ok to use on his nose? Is there anything specifically for dogs that I can get to protect his skin? It's just that small area but it's such a sensitive one.

Mixed Breed Pictures / Teamshredit strikes again!!
« on: January 13, 2006, 06:06:35 pm »
Chip and I recently purchased a home which included a beautifully landscaped yard. The first photo is of the perfect little bushes that lined the patio. We had about three weeks to enjoy those little bushes, as seen in photo #2. <sigh>

On the bright side the dogs have two years worth of chew toys(#3)....not to mention we now have expanded our patio space by filling in the area with concrete.
Daisy and Luke even put in their own personal touches, and we now have their paw prints forever stamped into the patio. On every single square.  ::)

Medical Conditions & Diseases / No more heats!!!
« on: January 13, 2006, 04:22:20 pm »
We finally got Daisy fixed and boy am I relieved! She seems to be doing well so far, although she is a bit lethargic.
Luke is frustrated because all he wants to do is play play play, and his sister just isn't into it right now. He's tried every tactic from luring her into a chase, stealing her toys, even biting her nose. We tell him "gentle...kisse s!" which so far has only been used for people. Luke is used to wrestling, chewing and sitting on Daisy, this just doesn't make any sense to him! Poor guy.  ;D
