Great Pyrenees Discussions / Pyr people I'd like your opinion
« on: January 03, 2006, 08:50:23 pm »
My other half and I have been going back and forth since we got Lucas as to what mix he is. His mama is a 57lb pit/german shepherd and Daisy, Luke's sister, is the spitting image of her.
The woman I got them from told me the father is a samoyed. Well I saw the father, and while I agree Luke has all the characteristic s, he and the dad were the same size 2 months ago. So now, a week shy of 8 months, he is over 70 lbs and still growing.

We think he could be part Pyr, and since you all hang out with Pyrs everyday I wanted your opinion.

Also, what are common traits; physical, behavioral. He doesn't have double dew claws. It's not life threatening that I know, but I love my big guy and want to find out as much as I can.  :)

Here are some pics...

Meet & Greet BPOers / San Diego play date?

I noticed an earlier thread posted about a SoCal play date. Has this already happened? I'm in San Diego and am all for another one! Dog beach?

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / O the whining!!!
« on: December 27, 2005, 07:51:34 pm »
This is more of a vent than anything. For the past 7 1/2 months I have been the proud owner of a non-whining dog. I take the dogs to work with me and while Daisy tends to get whimpery toward the end of the day, Luke has always been very well behaved.

So today, Chip asked to take one of the dogs and I said "sure honey, please take Daisy", thinking my day would be quiet and productive.
O man.
Luke has not stopped whining ALL DAY. Whining, scratching at the gate, letting out shrill high-pitched barks. He's freaking out! He seems perfectly healthy, I've taken him out 3 times to go potty and he starts up again immediately when I bring him back in. Luke knows the routine we have about coming to work(for 7 months)....I don't understand. He's been here without Daisy and has been great. Why would he start now? Should I be worried?

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Daisy's in her first heat!
« on: December 26, 2005, 08:59:10 pm »
I wanted to get her fixed before she was 7 months but we had to move and just couldn't get it together in time. She started bleeding a week ago just shy of 7 1/2 months. Since I had planned on getting her fixed earlier I haven't educated myself on female dog reproduction. Her behavior hasn't really changed, but she is making a mess  :-\
How long does this usually last? It's been about 7-8 days. I'd like to have her fixed this week if possible.
Secondly, I just moved and haven't found a vet that I like yet. They have been getting their shots at a clinic that doesn't have discount spay or neuter(they are affliated with a vet group that I don't care for).
I am willing to pay for quality care but have yet to find a vet that I feel really cares about the animals more so than upselling me. Is there a less costly alternative for spaying?

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / my dogs jump on everyone!
« on: December 09, 2005, 05:19:41 pm »
I have been fortunate enough to bring my puppies to work(a frame shop/gallery) and they have been very well socialized and they LOOOVE people! I have tried to be consistent in their training but unfortunately some of my customers encouraged jumping and they have not learned it is wrong. Well, Luke is seven months now, and can easily put his paws on my shoulders. This is no longer "cute"...he is knocking people over! I keep them in the back with a gate but I really want to solve this issue so they can be out front again.
I'm not too late am I?
