Treatment & Preventative Meds / Questions about vaccinations
« on: September 09, 2006, 10:01:19 am »
Lucah got is 3rd set of DHPP today and the bordatella also.  Does anyone know how safe he is outside now?  We have been keeping him in the yard, but really want to get him to this great park we live close to.

We live in Los Angeles, Ca., I know that a lot of diseases can be regional, so just wondering if he is safe for the park yet?

He will go back in 4 weeks for a nother bordatella and rabies.

Please excuse any spelling errors.  I feel like being casual today.

I think the setup was a little off.  Should be more complicated, I remeber there being something about the two being taken to hospitals in the opposite direction at the same time.  But that one is always a good one.

I also think it's cool how everyone in my neighborhood does the Cesar "shhh" when walking their dogs.  I live in a neighborhood with all sorts of incomes and education levels, but it seems like Cesar is just crossing all sorts of lines.

I personally don't do the "shhh", but I do see the point of associating a sound that makes the dog stop doing things.

I think my favorite person on his show has been the lady with Beauford, the boxer. She didn't want him to help her train him, she wanted him to find Beauford a girlfriend. He started to try to tell her that Beauford wasn't, in fact, one of her relatives reincarnated, but she wouldn't hear it, so he finally just gave up. At the end of the show, when the female was there, the lady dressed her up in doggy lingerie. Seeing a boxer in a pink silk nightie just cracked me up!

That one made me cringe pretty big.  She had that "look" in her eye like you really couldn't trust her with sharp objects.  I do wonder how she could afford such a nice house though.  Not that she couldn't hold down a job, but it definately seems like she fell into some money from somewhere.

No trainer is perfect and if anyone "idolizes" Cesar than they have serious issues.  I do like his show and think he is really good with dogs.  We have used some of his techniques and they work.  If anything we feel more confident with Lucah...we know that we don't have to be "vicitims" to his behavior.  If anything Cesar reminds us who is in charge and to be diligent with your dogs.

I get the biggest laugh when he has to tell people that their dogs are not there children...and they don't want to believe him.  But all of this just reminds us how we should act around our dogs in order to make better lives for all.

I have read many behavorist books and all of them can rub a person the wrong way...usually they live on farms and have nothing to do but lecture and train, so they really seem to not think about "working" people with dogs.  If even feels like they don't think it's a good idea to have a dog unless you live in a house on a 1/2 acre of land.  But still even some of them have useful info...and you have to just weed through it to find stuff you like.

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Re: new food bowl

This looks like a great product.  I do wonder if the dog's muzzle can get too big for it.

We use to just put a toy (kong) in Lucah's bowl and that helped, but recently we switched to a flat baking pan and that seems to help also.

Thanks for the complements.  Lucah is currently 14 and a half weeks old and about 45 pounds.  We don't have our hands full with him, he is very well behaved.  We do have to deal with stubborness though.  Once he finds a spot he likes to lay in that's it.  We are not too worried since those spots are usually in direct rebellion to the heat, so I understand.

He can sit, go to the down position and shake with treats being offered. He has't perfected the "Come" command though. He is almost house broken, I would not trust him alone, but knows where he is suppose to go.  We would like to get him to "tell" us when he wants to go out.  Since we don't live in a one story apt. and spend our time on the second story it isn't as easy as going to the door.

When he finishes his shots he is going into obedience school for real training, but yes, we are very happy with our baby.

Just thought I post some pics of our baby.  He is doing real well.  He's learning, growing, and becoming quite a great boy. Akiko said she cannot wait to see him full grown.

You can check out Lucah's blog at: http://lucahproject.blogspot.com/

I have decided...

I am going with Solid Gold Wolf Cub.  It has good levels of protein and fat and no corn in the ingredients.  I got a lot of Science Diet and Nutro suggestions, but I never really felt all that good about corn products in dog food.  A guy at a pet store tried to get me to buy something called LOTUS, but it didn't have a puppy formula.

It was funny that he tried to push LOTUS though.  He claimed it was the best out there, but 3 years ago the same store was pushing WELLNESS just as hard.  I guess you have to be careful and do your research.

I am attaching some pics below

Thanks for the answers.  I find that the puppy food might make the best sense.  But I guess I will look for more answers at local pet shops and here on the web.

Old English Mastiff Discussions / What to feed a puppy?
« on: July 31, 2006, 02:58:17 pm »
Lucah (our OEM) had his first Vet visit.  She told me he should be on a puppy food so that he doesn't grow too quick.  My research said that puppies should have medium levels of protein and fat.  Puppy food seems to have larger amounts of protein and fat, but, it also has increased calcium.

What do I feed our puppy?

Regular food has lower protein and fat.  Puppy food has more calcium.  does ayone has a sugestion with what works safest for a puppy.  I am not a size freak that wants a monster, but I want to make sure he is healthy and happy.

Ideas?
