Well, we've made it four months -- I've heard it can take this long to see the "REAL" temperament of an SRO.  I'm still crazy about him, and I'm pretty sure he thinks he's died and gone to doggie heaven.

What I love most about him is his independent nature (aloofness).  He's very attached to me, but if we're both sitting around the house, he doesn't annoy me with wanting constant attention and he would NEVER stand at his food bowl or at the back door, barking to be fed or let out.  Of course, if he sees me heading to the kitchen and he knows its dinner time, he's very excited.  And if he needs to go outside to do his business and sees me going toward the back door, he runs to let me know -- "NOW would be a good time to let me out!"  For the most part, he's like a bottomless bladder -- rarely is he anxious to go to the side yard (where he always poops).  The FRONT door is another matter.  I won't let him go through any door in front of me, and if we're going outside, he has to sit and stay before I open the door.  Sometimes it takes a while and sometimes he's very cooperative.

When we go for a walk, I'm very careful to make him follow the same rules every time.  I don't allow stopping to sniff, I stopped letting people pet him (would take forever to walk 1 mile if I did) and when we come to an intersection -- he stops as soon as I stop.  And he always walks at my side or behind, I don't let him lead me.

Since we've been walking for a while, we've built up to 45 minute walks almost every evening (both of us are out of shape).  I think those walks have made us work as a team and even though he's still pretty stubborn about some things (like moving away from the door), it's incredible how easy it is to walk him past barking dogs, children, traffic and other things some dogs have a problem with.
The only thing that scares him is loud rumbling noises (like bad mufflers or huge air conditioners).

I guess it's true of any breed that thinks for themselves when they're out doing their jobs (guarding livestock) -- they're so smart they can either be amazing or overwhelming.  Einstein is definitely amazing.  He's the favorite dog in my neighborhood (and we have a LOT of dogs).

That's all for now, folks.

Sarah

BabsT -- did you see the NG special the other night?  I can't remember what the overall subject was, but they did a little segment about COs.  They made them out to be uncontrollable beasts!  Just because the stupid guy that owned one had never learned to be dominant.

They interviewed the only US breeder (I think her name was Leslie?).  I missed most of that, but it was hilarious watching this little man trying to "walk" his CO.  It was more like him laying on the ground, heels digging in, while the CO pulled him.

Here's some newer pictures of Einstein.  The man is my brother, Lane.  One of these days I'll get a pic with ME and my sweet baby.

How 'bout we all buy property together, subdivide it and call it Big Paws Only Estates?  Then, we could goo-goo and ga-ga over each other's pups and not have to put up with all these stupid people -- think of the dog park we could have!

If I win the lottery, I'll let ya'll know where we'll all be living.

I'm a hippy at heart.

How flattering.  I just want to say arummpphhhhhh!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / 2nd Dog
« on: April 12, 2006, 07:23:49 am »
Okay, Einstein and I have been happy together since the end of January.  We've gone from his ear infection/almost apathetic stage, to the jumping for joy/almost out of control stage.  I know he sleeps the majority of the day (because that's what he does on the weekends).  BUT, he seems like he's getting bored.  Since he's a guard/herding dog I wonder if he'd be happy if he had a dog to "guard".

We go for walks of 30-45 minutes EVERY day or sometimes, if my bones are aching too much, we go to the dog park for an hour.  But that's such a small part of his day, you know?

Since I can't move to the country and provide the acreage he'd love to have, I'd like to provide a situation in my home with more "work" for him -- some kind of job.  Other than carrying backpacks when we go for a walk (which I haven't tried) I'm thinking maybe he'd be happier if he had a friend.

Babs, I'm especially interested to hear your thoughts.

Our Great Pyrenees just turned one. We had him since he was a puppy. He has not finished growing though. He is currently 75 lbs. I'll be happy to email a picture to you. He is beautiful and very gentle. He plays well with cats and dogs. He is not destructive. He is housebroken. I'm asking $100, only to help ensure he goes to a good home.

If you are interested, please call me.  I need to explain why I need to find him a home and I can answer questions better.

Thanks,

I don't really need or want another big white furry dog, especially another male, but I find it fascinating that people can just "give away" their dogs.  Wouldn't you take a long time considering before you adopted a Great Pyrenees?  I know I spent weeks agonizing over what kind, size, temperament of dog to adopt.

Anyway, wanted to let all the Pyr people on BPO know about this sweetie.

Hopefully this will attract other SRO's to the website.

I'm proud to present more photos of my darling, Einstein.  This first one is after being a good boy in the car for over an hour!

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / Shelter Dog

This sweetie was featured in the Houston Chronicle this Sunday -- he's at the same shelter Einstein came from!  I don't dare adopt him, but he would be such a sweet little buddy for Einstein.

They're calling him a Komondor/Puli mix.  What do ya'll think?

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Einstein Update
« on: February 26, 2006, 05:41:38 pm »
Einstein's been with me over 30 days now.  In this short amount of time he's changed -- completely.  In a good way.

When he first got here, he was very quiet, almost timid and never in the way (as in portraying a speed bump).  Had no interest in chew-toys, waited patiently for me to let him out or let him back in.  Walked next to me, slack-leash and was tired out after 2 blocks.

NOW, he stakes out the doorway for his "nap" -- he sleeps/rests with his eyes open, but if I want to go sit on the porch, I have to WAKE HIM UP to get him to move. If I have car keys in hand he's up and at 'em!  We're working on sit & stay so that I can get through the door and turn back around for him to come out, instead of being pushed out of the way by the white streak!  Incredibly, he learned this in one day.

Also, I've been explaining to him where I'm going and telling him when I'll be back.  I swear if I just do this, he'll sit there calmly as I'm leaving.  If I get up toward the door with no explanation, he'll be screeching through the house trying to get to the door before I can close it on him!  And when that happened (in the past) he'd bark for awhile when I left.

And the chewing!  So far he's been very selective -- only chews stuff he seems to know isn't valuable.  he's left my leather shoes, tennis shoes, blankets, and magazines that get left on the floor.  He's chewed empty packages, grocery bags (for pooper-scooping).  I provided some rawhide bones at first, but my vet didn't recommend them  & I've noticed he chews so rough he breaks off parts of almost everything including plastic.  So instead he has a couple of stuffed animals and a kong -- with peanut butter it keeps him happy for about 30 minutes!  Nowadays he seems to enjoy picking up his toys and moving them around -- I even found him asleep with the teddy bear between his front paws.  Too cute!

I can only say I love this guy so much!

Just had to share that with ya'll.

Food Discussion & Information / Ear Infection
« on: February 15, 2006, 12:50:17 pm »
Einstein's ear infection has gotten worse!  We started out with antibiotics and drops -- the antibiotics made him sick and he lost 4 pounds because he wouldn't eat.  Then we went with just drops 2x a day (which is really a challenge because Einstein's ears are so sensitive he won't let you near them -- even with treats).  After almost a month of trying to fight the infection, the vet put antibiotic packing in both ears yesterday (it took two people to hold him while she did this).  She thinks it might just take two weeks of this to clear it up.

I've applied to the Shelter insurance for at least a partial reimbursement, since he came to me with the ear infection -- I was prepared to spend $500 over the next couple of months, not in the first 3-4 weeks.  I realize big dogs are naturally going to be more expensive, but I'm wondering how I'm going to afford getting him past this first episode!

Poor Einstein.  I could tell last night he was really worn out with all the effort of treating his ears yesterday. I hope this latest treatment works and we can start fresh -- keeping his ears clean, his skin/coat healthier and his diet improved (we switched to EVO).  Learning about his care and grooming is challenging, but nothing I'm going to shy away from.

I just can't believe how much I already love this guy.  I hope I am able (financially) to provide a good home for him.  I'm planning on having a garage sale in a couple of weeks -- because I need to get rid of junk around my house and because I need the cash.

I just wanted to vent a little bit.  I know many of you have spent lots more than this on your babies, and probably don't have any more money than I do.  I'm especially sympathetic with Kori(?) from Croatia who recently took in a stray German Shepherd.  She's living on a student's pay and still has so much room in her heart she's willing to share it with a homeless dog.

Einstein gives me so much that money can't buy -- he's the best friend I've been wishing I had for a long time.

Thanks for letting me get this out.

Food Discussion & Information / Switching to EVO
« on: February 13, 2006, 01:47:24 pm »
Einstein is always itchy.  And he had bacterial & yeast infection in his ears when I found him.  I switched him to Evo this weekend (I bought Nutro the day I got him, because it came in a smaller bag at Petsmart and I didn't want to invest in food I knew nothing about).  I know it's too soon to see any improvement, but I'm hoping the Evo helps with the yeast problem.  My problem is that he seems hungry even after eating the 3 1/4 cups recommended on the bag!  He gets about 10 liver treats (little cubes) a day for training and letting me put drops in his ears and I give him a dog biscuit once or twice a day.  But he needs to be losing weight (about 10 pounds) not gaining.  Anyone have any suggestions?  Should I just let him chew on his monster bone instead of giving him more food?  I feel like I'm starving him to death (now that I think about, he's like a little kid saying "MOM I'M STARVING!").

Maybe I could give him a piece of bread or something?  Extra exercise?
