General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Anyone in Houston, Texas?
« on: February 13, 2006, 01:20:25 pm »
I noticed on Craigslist someone had posted a link to Big Paws Only.  Does this mean someone here is in Houston?  I'd love to know if there are other BPO'ers near me.

I love having a rare breed of dog, but I'm curious if there are ANY OTHER South Russian Ovcharkas here at BPO, or even in the US.  AKC doesn't even list it as a recognized breed.  The only information I'm finding is in Europe.

I'm wondering if Einstein traveled here from very far away or if it's possible there is a breeder in my area -- maybe they'd know him!  I just can't imagine why someone would get such a beautiful unique dog and then neglect him and/or dump him on the highway and/or give him up to a shelter.  Einstein has obviously been well taken care of in his puppy-life -- he's so well-mannered and socialized with people and other dogs.  But judging from the callouses on his elbows and missing fur on his sides, my vet thinks he must have had to lie on a hard surface for long periods.

Just curious.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / The REAL Einstein shows up
« on: January 28, 2006, 01:14:06 pm »
After several days of antibiotics and ear drops, Einstein is becoming a different dog.  Last night after going out for a potty break, he came in and was acting like a puppy -- jumping around in front of me, pawing at me and shaking his head around.  He's taken an interest in chewing on his monster bone.  He's destroyed one set of blinds (no biggie -- I should have raised them up, but he wasn't interested in that window the first few days at my house).  He got so excited when I left yesterday he "accidentally" knocked over a huge potted plant (in his defense, I had vacuumed and didn't place it exactly where it had been).
So, I guess I'm in for a ride now.  : )

My neighbor said he barks a lot during the day when I'm not there.   I've heard of collars that emit a high-pitched sound or a citronella spray when the dog barks.  I don't want him to NOT BARK at all, and it really doesn't matter if he barks Mon-Fri 8-5 when I'm at work -- no one nearby works nights or anything.  Any training we could work on?  It's hard to tell him not to bark since he rarely barks when I'm with him.

You guys are the greatest -- I'm so glad I can ask these questions here.

Thanks,

Sarah

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Six Toes
« on: January 26, 2006, 06:01:34 pm »
The vet told me (and now I can see) that Einstein has 6 toes -- PLUS dewclaws.  Is this rare?  Does it mean anything?  Like he's part lion or something?

Just curious,
Sarah

Introduce Yourself to the Forum / Found my soul mate
« on: January 22, 2006, 01:21:32 pm »
Hello All.  I am the proud roommate of Einstein -- a half Pyrenees half Irish Wolfhound.  The sweetest, most beautiful dog I've ever seen.  I adopted him yesterday in the middle of a thunderstorm here in Houston, Texas.  It was meant to be.  I look forward to lots of good advice and feedback from the contributors to this website.  I've been lurking around for a few weeks because I was preparing myself to make a commitment -- I've been amused, touched and motivated by your posts.

About Einstein:  He 4 years old (or 2, depending on who you ask).  He's all white, with the dew claws, but his coat is wiry.  He weighs 100 lbs., loves to sleep, be scratched and brushed.  Enjoys walks, but isn't impatient about going outside.

Our first night together (last night) he slept on the floor at the foot of my bed (he refuses to get on the furniture).  Besides snoring, he didn't make a sound.  This morning we went for a short walk and he was sniffing the ground, but didn't seem the least bit perturbed by other dogs -- even the dogs that were barking to him.

Okay, I could go on and on, but I'll be posting more in the future and you'll get to hear all about him!
