Saint Bernard General Discussions / Re: Saints and Stairs....
« on: December 22, 2007, 06:09:26 pm »
Well, I suppose I should add something to that. Obviously, ALL stairs can't be avoided. If you go somewhere with your dog and there are 2 or 3 stairs going up somewhere, those really shouldn't be an issue. However, if there is a ramp, use it instead. Try to avoid them as much as possible. But I'd still say, for going up a flight of stairs, it's a big no no and is very hard on the hips and elbows of big dogs.

Big dogs, especially Saints, and going up or down stairs should be avoided all together. It's just way too hard on their joints, especially on a growing puppy's. It can do serious damage to forming and growing joints. Plus, if the dog misses a step ever and falls down them, they could be seriously injured. Try to train your Saint not to climb the stairs, even if you go up them. It's for his own good that he not go up or down them.

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Re: Stinky collars?

Personally, I would just go buy new nylon collars for them, if washing them hasn't seemed to help. Sorry I don't have any other recommendation s!

Wonderful picture! You'll have to help us do that sometime! We can't seem to manage it with just 3 adults and 2 dogs in the family!  :D  ::)

I am in Kansas, but sorry! Have finals this week and won't be able to travel!  :( What state is your friend in? I can be on the look out for any that might be closer to them too.

Saint Bernard Pictures / Re: Looking for Saint pics

I don't have any pictures of it, but my Dolly's back legs are extremely bow-legged. It's just from her bad breeding. But I'll try to see if I MIGHT have a pic of it and just don't know it. She's nearly 3 and there's not much we can do about it though. We avoid stairs with her and help her get into the car. It's very possible your Saint's legs could be bow-legged too. It's fairly common in Saints.  :(

Wolfhound Discussions & Pictures / Re: Personality change
« on: November 26, 2007, 07:50:28 am »
While I personally don't own an IW and don't claim to know tons about the breed, I have been through a puppy or 3.  ;) I would say at 1.5 years old, your boy is settling into his real personality. He is no longer the frolicking, care free pup he was. He is growing into a dog. A noble dog. A dog who doesn't need strangers to fawn over him and doesn't want crowds fawning over him either. He wants to be a dog and choose who he wants to pet him and choose when he wants to be done with pets. I wouldn't be too concerned. That age is just right for you to start seeing a change in him as he matures from pup to dog. But I would make sure to comfort him if he does cower with lots of people around. Reassure him that he is okay. We don't want him to become too fearful in situations like that.
