I have an ecollar.. We got it when she was a few months under 2 years old.  We needed a negative to happen when listening wasn't going so well..  And leash dinks, time outs, etc weren't doing enough.  But, an ecollar isn't the right tool for every dog.

No one in any store would sell you an ecollar for a puppy.. usually they ask how old your dog is and steer you towards other things..  Even petsmart won't sell you one if your dog is on the side of small, or if it's under 6 months..

There are 100 other ways to train.  An ecollar shouldn't be the first method on a dog so young.

I'd watch kneeing in the chest.  I know a few dogs who became people weird.  Sure they don't jump anymore, but they aren't the same dogs either.

Also know of a lady that was taught to knee her dog.. Lost it's balance and landed on it's spine and she swears she didn't knee it too hard.  Broke it's spine when it landed and had fairly severe nerve damage and was put down.

Think an OB class may be better than trying to take advice and do it yourself.

Olive oil is medium high in omega 6, and fairly low in omega 3.  Omega 6 is the more problematic problem causing omega.  Omega 3 is the helpful fatty oil.  If he is eating 2 spoonfuls a day, I'd suggest he find something high in omega 3 to eat to balance it out.  While not a noticable problem now over time it may do some internal damage you can't readily see.

ARGH!  I am at Petfinders about three times a week, for no other reason than to look at all the pups I can't have.  It kills me to go there but I keep looking for a female white shepherd mix, even though I cannot have one.

I also scan our humane society, too.  In the past week I've seen two female shepherds and two beautiful long haired dachshunds that are breaking my heart.

Why do we DO this??? :-\

Oh.. so i'm not the only up for torture...
I'm up to 4 cockers in NY and one in WI and I am dying to write the slelters about them, but if I do I may fall full in love and my Mother says no more pets...  So I keep staring at the one's I've 'picked' and torturing myself..

This has been posted on 3 other boards I frequent.. The pics are cute.  The real story is not.

Red kongs are normal strength.  Black ones are the extra durable.  Blue vet kongs are actually red kong strength.  The only plus to the blue kong is that the pieces are xrayable to be able to spot a blockage if eaten.. But they are less durable than a black kong..

I've found a lot of non crate trained dogs have never been taught to hold their bladder more than a few hours.  Hard to work up to it with no way to 'stop' it.. Other than taking the dog outside to prevent it from happening indoors..

Some dogs will never been fine being free, or may take years to work up to it.  If the dog is destroying stuff, it isn't ready for the giant privilege of freedom and needs to be crated.  Loosing personal stuff sucks, but if it's a live electrical cord or having eaten something that causes an obstruction you'd feel horrible since it is preventable.

While I'm sure your dog was wonderful, there are no guarantees that any dog will be like your old one.  Very very few reputable breeder create mixes.  Please try www.petfinder. com and see if you can locate one needing a home.
