Neapolitan Mastiff Discussions & Pictures / Long time no see!
« on: November 12, 2006, 11:19:35 pm »
Hi all, I know I haven't been on for a long time, but my computer has been acting a little crazy. Well, I have good news and bad news. If you don't remember, a couple months ago Laika was diagnosed with diskospondylit is (sp?). The good news is that Laika hasn't shown any signs of pain or discomfort for the last couple months. We took her to the vet last weekend for a routine checkup, just to make sure the antibiotics are doing their job. That's where the bad news comes in. In the x-ray, the area around her pelvic bone is very cloudy. He said that he expected the calcium build-up to go away since she'd been on antibiotics for two months, but it just hasn't. He said it's nothing to be REALLY worried about, since she isn't showing any signs of discomfort, but it could cause some problems down the road. His best guess is that we just got to it too late. In case you all forgot, I had taken Laika to three different vets since she was 2 months old, and none of them knew what was wrong with her, even though they took x-rays. Sooo since they didn't know what it was, and was actually making it worse by giving her two week's worth of antibiotics, her calcium build-up is irreversible now. Ugh. Also, something that really worries me but not so much the vet, is that 2 months ago when we first started seeing him, she weighed in at 95 pounds. This last weekend, she weighed 93. So instead of gaining weight during her growth spurt (she's now 11 months), she's lost 2 pounds. The vet said it's because her body was working so hard to fight the infection, but this is supposed to be her prime growth spurt, and she didn't do any growing! Should I be this worried? Ugh. Sorry everyone, just needed to vent a bit I guess!

Oh, yeah, and we have a new addition to our family! Meet Boris (he's on the desk).

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / New documentary
« on: October 11, 2006, 03:57:31 am »
Hey all, I don't know if anyone has heard of this documentary before, but it's called Dealing Dogs.
Dealing Dogs

Each year, 42,000 dogs are sold to veterinary schools and research labs by Class B dealers, who are required by federal law to buy the animals from pounds, shelters and small breeders and to treat them humanely. However, many Class B dealers violate the law. DEALING DOGS exposes the abuses that took place at one of America's most notorious Class B dealers - Martin Creek Kennel in Arkansas.

I haven't seen it yet, but it's on my Netflix list!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Playing in the rain!!
« on: October 10, 2006, 03:55:30 am »
It was raining this morning, but I knew the dogs needed baths anyway, so I just let them play in the rain. At first, Laika didn't think the rain was all that fun. She just sat on the porch looking at me like "You want me to go out there?!"

Kingsley had no problem running out there though. He took refuge under the shed for a little bit. If you look carefully, you can see two eyes.

I took a little video of it too:

In the middle of the video, when it looks like they're wrestling in the yard, it's actually her dragging him by the tail. Needless to say, Kingsley and her got a little dirty. You can't really tell she's filthy because it blends in with her fur.

And of course, some pictures of them being muddy:

The worst part is, since I had an unexpected day off yesterday, I swept and mopped all the floors. Looks like I'll have to do it again!

Food Discussion & Information / I found a new pet store!!!
« on: October 09, 2006, 05:56:47 am »
Since we moved down here I've been searching for a pet store other than PetSmart, but I had almost given up. Then I saw it - a pretty small feed store. I decided to give it a try. I walked in and almost dropped to my knees and kissed the floor. It was doggy lover's heaven!!! REAL bones, dozens of brands of dog food, great toys and treats, AH I'm in heaven!!! I bought lots of great bones for the pups and some new food bowls. I am definitely going back there!!! The few dollars extra is totally worth it!!

Okay, so this whole destructive mood Laika's in has GOT to stop. She's totally lost freedom priviledges when we're gone. All week we've come home to a new thing destroyed. It started out as just socks, underwear, bags (apparently she's not a Disney princess type of girl), the cord to our air hockey table, and boxes. But last night we came home, and there were pieces of hard plastic all over the den. Couldn't figure it out, until we looked under the foozball table. There was a huge black spot on our white carpet. Yes, she chewed up one of my gel pens. I spent about an hour scrubbing and steam-cleaning it last night, but you can definitely still see it. ARGH!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Dog Detective?

Has anyone heard of this website?

http://dogdetective.com/

Someone posted a lost chow with a link to its page on that website on craigslist, so I started looking at the website. It looks like a really great thing! From what I understand, it notifies the shelters and humane societies for you about your dog! I definitely bookmarked it in my browser just in case *knock on wood*!!

70 Dogs in Odessa ( Texas ) Losing Guardian to Cancer. All Need Homes!

Posted 04/13/2006

Dear Animal Friends,

We are sad to report that there are 70 dogs at a sanctuary in Odessa, Texas who need to be placed in loving homes. They are currently at a sanctuary run by a wonderful man who is in the last stages of prostate cancer. If these dogs are not rescued soon, he will be unable to care for them and a local humane society will put them down.

Most of the dogs are mid- to large-sized. All the dogs are friendly to dogs and humans; they are starved for human affection. There are no agressive dogs. The dogs have been neutered and spayed, vaccinated, tested for heartworm and tick fever, treated for ticks and fleas, treated for tapeworms and some have undergone extensive dental work. Most of these dogs have been in the sanctuary for 1 to 5 years. They have not lived in homes, so they will require some socialization.

If you or anyone you know has the time, patience and the room in your heart and home to provide for one or more fo these animals, please contact Max Green at Max@idausa.org or leave a message at 415 388-9641, ext 222 and someone will get back to you right away.

Thank you for all that you do to help animals

Sincerely,
In Defense of Animals

Awww who's around Austin?

http://dallas.craigslist.org/pet/214290961.html

7-8 months old, pure bred, no papers, up to date on shots except rabies (needs that one!). Sweet, loving. Housetrained, crate trained, good with kids, cats and other dogs. Livestock guardian instincts are strong. Will waive adoption fee is you come to Austin to get her.

Discussions & Information on Grooming / Furminator
« on: September 28, 2006, 05:20:26 am »
I've been calling around to the local groomers to get the Furminator treatment for Kingsley, and I can't believe the prices! The cheapest I've been quoted is $81! Is this the going rate? In Kansas we paid $25! I'm actually missing Kansas a little bit now!

Every once in awhile I just take lots of random pictures of my dogs...with faces like this, who could resist?!  ;)

She was trying to stick her bottom lip out and get popcorn, but it got stuck half in half out :) It took her like 5 minutes to get it back in!

Ah, the tongue!

They're so cute when they're asleep...

And of course Kingsley being a divo :)

Groans, Gripes, Brags & Boasts / Irresponsible breeding, what to do?
« on: September 26, 2006, 03:28:22 am »
The kids I work with at the center are from very low-income families. Most of the parents can't speak English and aren't citizens. Well, this week is National Dog Week, so I made up a display and we talked about our dogs. One of my students told me she had a german shepherd. I told her I loved german shepherds, and she said "Well, you can have one of her puppies, if you want." I kept asking little questions and basically this is what I found out. They have this german shepherd. She's about 2 years old. She's an outside dog. She does get to come on the back porch when she's in labor, though. This is her third pregnancy. They're really hoping these puppies live because so far they've all died but two or three. She's not registered or anything, and the stud is just one of her mom's friend's dogs that they thought was cool-looking so they just took her over there. Obviously, no vet care. The puppies get little to no human contact because the mother is very protective of them and no one can get near them, even after they die.

What do I do? How can I approach this? I've already decided to scrap all of our plans for the week and concentrate on dogs and dog care because of this and a few other comments the kids made, but what should I do about this particular situation?
