No, you are not NUTS, you have just seen a lot more reality than most people.
I work at a Humane Society canine program. The work that goes into controlling forty dogs at any given time is overwhelming.
We have a mix of pens and runs and work with the County Dog Shelter to rescue and/or rehome 95% of them.
If I were at an off leash park;
Step 1 Walk the park with my dog on a short leash
Step 2 Walk the park with my dog on a retractable leash
Step 3 Look over the dogs to check for strong dominates and if satisfied only then would I let my dog off lead.

Finding a rescue is as time consuming as choosing a breeder. You can find pure breed dogs in all ages, but you have to be choosey.
A young dog will take to your home more easily than a pup. You need not take the first one that comes along. Look, Meet, and Spay or Neuter.
(A dog lover currently with a papered Lab from the pound, a GSD from a private rescue, and a breeder Welsh Corgi.) Over 40 years of rescues, 12 total.

I hope the lady can make another dent in the breed specific laws here in Ohio.
The Sunday Dispatch had an insert that featured Therapy Dogs at the OSU James Cancer Center.

Here is a link to a headline story in a Columbus suburb where a woman is fighting for her American Bulldog.

Jaspersmom,
I don't think people here mind talking about prices per se. What they mind is the judgmental people who ask so they can raise their voices and tell the whole room their opinion.

Choosing a fence system is easy (they all can work).
The trainer who will work with you to make it work should be determinating factor. Proper setting of the fence and the collar are the real issue. Proper coaching is also important. Our GSD was a runner who was a changed dog is 5 days with proper introduction to the fence.

Babs,
Zero always looks so "all knowing". I love that boy.
My daughter grew-up speaking dog as well as human. She would growl at her mother if she didn't want to do what she was told.
Hope the pregnancy is going well now.
