Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Re: Counter surfing -- any tips?
« on: November 03, 2006, 01:57:08 am »
The cookie sheets work well.  If they get used to that, try putting pebbles inside empty soda cans and tape the hole shut.  Stack the cans on the cookie sheet.

If they chew up the cans, maybe hot sauce inside them will help.

My big dog is a lazy Newfie.  If he can't reach it while standing, he won't bother.

This is what I know about base housing from Marine friends with kids and dogs, just not as many kids and dogs as you have.  Wow.   0.o

The first thing they do is have the carpet removed and put into storage.  When they have to leave, they move out the kids and dogs and put the carpet back in.  One friend with a Dane mix had all the doors, including cabinets, removed during their pup's teething stage.  They have everything that gets broken fixed before inspection.

You are so right about your kid's and dog's behavior affecting your husband's job.  A family here (MGAGCC/MAGTFTC) a few years ago had an unruly child who intentionally broke another kid's leg.  They will never be allowed in base housing again and the husband's chance of promotion is zip.  I was told that the way it is thought about is this--if a man can't control his pets and kids, he can't control troops.

That crate linked to above is fantastic.  We have one for our Newfie so he can get some rest because my terrier just wants to play 24/7.

Our Newfie also heads toward the coolest sleeping spots.  In the summer, that is usually in the shower.  I put a few wet towels in the shower before he goes in.  After he is asleep, I go in once and a while and put more water on the towels.

He has so much fur, he doesn't usually get wet on his skin.

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Re: Does Anyone Have a Dog Door?

Here in the desert, snow and rain are not an issue.   We have sand.  Lots and lots of sand.  There is a small vacuum kept next to the dog door the Newfie uses and I clean the floor a jillion times a day.

The little dog's door is being used by a rodent on a daily basis.  It is getting into the birds' room and cleaning up their spills.  I must remember to close that door in the mornings...

Neapolitan Mastiff Discussions & Pictures / Re: Skin Problems - Neo

We just lost our Chow who had something wrong with her skin.  We were told it was the result of her immune system disorder.

I have heard of a thing called Alopecia X that can make the skin smell bad.

Is your dog smelly?

Dog doors are wonderful.

One of our dogs' doors goes to a fenced yard which the big dogs use when we are home.

When we are away, they use another dog door which opens onto a kennel with a concrete floor and chain-link panels for the walls and roof.  The panels are bolted to the cement and the nuts welded on.  There is a human-sized gate in one panel with a lock.

I prefer the flexible types with magnetic flaps and inserts to close the hole.  When it is windy, the magnets are not strong enough to hold the flap shut on the biggest door, but the small ones stays shut.  We have tried the ones where the door flap is solid plastic, and a nine pound dog broke the hinges off the first door in about five minutes.

Newfoundland Discussions / Re: Rosie and tennis ball videos

Wish I could look at the video, but my firewall says no.  So maybe you have one of those tennis balls on a rope.  If so, never mind.  :)

Tennis balls can be a choking hazard because of their size and because they are difficult to pull back out of the dog's mouth when covered with saliva.

There is a sad story about a Newfie named Beauty posted on a breeder's site in
California.

My Newfie prefers the Best Ball products.  They are practically indestructable and won't fit in his mouth.

That is so nice of you to do that.  Does your camera have the red eye button?  Do you have a good graphics program so you can edit the pictures?

I do editing, and if you don't have a program, or a red eye button, pm me and I will fix them for you till you get it all set up.

:)

Ditto the generator.  We have the opposite problem here in sunny southern California--it is too hot with no power.  We set up a generator late last spring and had to use it a few days later.  The zoo and I sure appreciated the air conditioner that runs on the generator.

One safety note, they need to be totally seperate from your house's wires so that people working on restoring the power don't get hurt when they expect the line to be dead, and yours isn't.  We got a bunch of hefty extension cords.

Those poor trees were shown on the news here.  How very sad.

Hope everything is all better now!

Congratulation s on the new addition!

I am also getting a pup from a non-local breeder.  There are size/age regulations as well as temperature regulations to fly them.  Check with individual carriers; they are all different.  My pup is coming from Oklahoma to Nevada, and the charge for the flight for her in cargo is 50 bucks.  It is also 50 bucks to be under the seat.

We havn't decided yet if she will be flown out in cargo, if I will fly there and transport her back under the seat, or if it is going to turn into a road trip.  Mostly it depends on her not being too big to fit under the airplane seat at 8 weeks.  The weather in Las Vegas is also a factor.

If you fly there, you can see the breeder's operation and all the dogs.

Food Discussion & Information / Re: Raw diet help needed
« on: October 18, 2006, 12:26:54 am »
Yes, it was a dietary deficiency for about eight weeks that caused my Newf's Rickets.  He got too much meat which is high in phosphorus and was also probably low in vitamin D which regulates calcium and phosphorus.  He needed more bones and sunshine.  That was why I asked the raw feeders how they evaluate the phosphorus to calcium ratio.

My Vet. says that calcium deficiency used to be much more common in dogs in the olden days who ate only table scraps.  In modern times, too much calcium has been linked to skeletal abnormalities like hip dysplasia, HOD, and OCD.

I wish I understood it better.  We are in a rural area and can have yummy livestock.

Sve those Canidae UPC code tags.  They have a rebate program.  I forget offhand (hubby picks up the feed cus we get hay too and I can't lift it)  how many bags you have to buy before you get the free bag.  Might be 12, or maybe 8.

We have a Chow with fragile intestines and Canidae lamb and rice is the only food she can tolerate.

My only experience with the BARF-type diet is with our poor Newfoundland who was damaged for life from a few weeks eating raw food.

Our Newfie was fed on a raw diet until we got him at 12 weeks.  Our Vet. says that his deformed leg bones were caused by an imbalance of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium.  He suggested that, unless we had access to a lab to analyze the mineral content of the food, we stick to a professionally prepared food.

The pup also arrived with a bacterial infection, worms, and dry brittle fur from the raw meat.

Here is a link that gives information on the other side of the BARF discussion.

So far, his twisted legs have resulted in $4,000.00 worth of surgery, and that is only for one joint on one leg.

How do you raw feeders ensure that the mineral balance is correct?  Most commercial dog food is just nasty.  I am getting a Cane Corso pup and do not want to repeat the mistakes the Newfie's breeder made with him.
