Just mix the tomato sauce in the food and it's no more of a mess than any other mess a Newfie makes while eating!! ;D  I heard of this through a real estate agent that has dogs and she didn't want them messing up her landscaping.

Two ideas that I used with my female Newf that were pretty successful.  There's a product that you give the dog orally that neutralizes the urine so it won't burn the plants.  I can't remember the name of it....but all the major pet stores carry it.  The downside is that it's pretty expensive for dogs the size of a New or a Pyr.  The easiest tihing is to put about a 1/4 cup of tomato sauce in with his food.  That seemed to work just as well!  With my present male I take him to the "pee" spot for his first morning pee that I think is the most concentrated and then try to hose it off the plants later in the day (IF I remember, IF I seem him do it!) ::)

Meet & Greet BPOers / Re: California get together
« on: April 21, 2005, 11:04:19 am »
This could be great fun!  Our cabin is at Lake Almanor...so anyplace around that area this summer would be perfect!  Those of us that love our giants are a different breed (pun intended!) My family has offered to get me fitted with a straight-jacket because I take my Newf EVERYWHERE with me.  We meet the most interesting people that way! ;D

Newfoundland Discussions / Heart murmur in Newf puppy
« on: April 21, 2005, 09:55:25 am »
We are supposed to be picking up a Newf puppy in a week.  His first heart test at eight weeks showed a 3 - 4 murmur but the breeder assures me that he will be clear at ten weeks....that it's very common in male newfs to have a heart murmur early but that it "resolves".  Have any of you heard this?   The vets that I have consulted are all concerned and think that it's probably not going to heal.  Any opinions? ???

I live in So.Cal but have a cabin and a daughter in No.Cal. It would be fun to get together.  Name a time and place and I'll try to do it!  Cowboy (newf) loves to play and we are hopefully picking up a Newf puppy (Chester) in a week.  He's had some trouble passing his heart test but the breeder assures me he'll pass at 10 weeks.  Fingers crossed!

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Re: Pet Insurance
« on: April 19, 2005, 08:01:30 pm »
If it makes you feel any better, I have had pet insurance on all my Newfs and our latest one (who is a rescue) also has idiopathic epilepsy.  The insurance company has paid for exactly nothing.  Another way to say it is: $00.00!!!  They didn't pay for the diagnosis, treatment of the neurogenic pnemonia, nor any of the medications!!  They also didn't pay for my first newfs hip replacement surgery.  My emergecny vet as actually recommended that I cancel it because the insurance company will blame any of my epi-boy's medical issues on either the epilepsy or the medications.  It probably good for accidents...bu t the giants don't seem to have too many accidents...ju st really expensive congenital problems!!!

We have shaved the Newf bellies in the summer....left all the rest of the coat alone.  They keep their bellies on the cool floors or on their cool-pads on their beds and seem to do well in the summer!

My 140 pound Newf sleeps on the biggest bed that Orvis makes....and he seems to be very comfortable on it.

:'(  I am so incredibly sorry for your loss.  I lost two Newfs last year and had a very similar experience.  My big male went first and my female was inconsulable.  I did get another male Newf but she missed her own pal.    She died six months after the male and I hated to let her go, but I knew her best bud must have needed her more.  I still have my loving rescue and we're planning to get a new baby for him!  The one thing I know for sure is when it is my time to go, I'll be joining my two best loves!

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Epilepsy study for pure bred dogs
« on: April 02, 2005, 08:56:08 pm »
There is a study being run by a consortium of universities (University of Missouri, University of Minnesota, Ohio State and the Animal Trust in England to try to isolate the gene that causes epilepsy.  If you have a dog that has epilepsy and would be interested in participating in the study, the research team would love to have you join them.

The website has all the information on epilepsy, a forum to post questions and get support and forms for sending in samples.  Here's the info:

http://www.canine-epilepsy.net/

The ideal is to get family groups so that the genes can be tracked but they would also appreciate samples from single affected dogs.  The goal is to be able to predict, with a simple blood test, if a dog is a carrier or will come down with the disease later.

Jeez!  My heart goes out to you!  What a tough thing to have to face!  I have a Newf with idiopathic epilepsy and I know how hard it is to live a chronic disease!

You should probably get a stool sample checked.  My Newfs were on that diet and they both picked up intestiinal nasties from the raw chicken.  I now cook for them....and give them their raw bones frozen.  No problems at all since I started cooking the meat and veg.
