Oh, Heather, I'm so sorry. This is such a scary time!  Just be there for her to listen and hold her close.  These are the times that tie a family together.

Good thoughts and prayers coming for all of you!

speaking of new pictures, what about the bern-newf puppies? Did I miss them?

Nope....I haven't had a chance, with the holidays, to go lurk there.  I heard she took them to City Hall and they were adorable!  So, far, though, none have been taken.....

A scary thought!!!!

Green Christmas here too, although we did have a tiny bit of rain yesterday.  Forecast is for high 60's with bright sunshine!  I'm hoping for a Christmas day walk on the hillsides with the family and Newfs!

I know how hard this adjustment period is!  Living with a dog with epilepsy (or really anybody you love) is full of anxiety and fear.  Try to have a life...Joey's in good hands:  he has you!!  Pheno works for many dogs and you're right:  hopefully you've got it controlled with the first attempt at treatment!  But, if he does seize, don't think of it as a failure, just think of it as a process!  It took a long time to get Cowboy's seizures under control...but we did it (fingers firmly crossed here!!!).  If you need a shoulder, there are several of us here who've gone through it and we're happy to support you!

Good luck and my fingers are crossed for you and Joey!!!

Sad news....Izzy/Grizzley is going back to rescue in the next week or two.  Jessica and Sean are devastated, I know, but the board of the camp where they work are so frightened of the liablity of a dog!  Apparently, Izzy/Grizzley is a talker.  If you have never been around a 'talking' Newf, it does sound like growling, but it really is an attempt at communication with people.  My first Newf, Otis 'talked':  he'd watch my mouth when I was talking to him and he would attempt to mimic me.  It really is the funniest thing!  I guess Izzy does the same thing while wagging his tail and wiggling but it's given the wrong impression.

It just makes me SO frickin' angry that people are so afraid of being sued and of the hold insurance companies have on our lives.  Izzy HASN'T bitten anyone, hasn't snapped or done anything to be rejected:  but rejected he is!!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRR Angry

Cowboy, my big Landseer has cluster seizures and is on Gabapentin three times a day and Potassium Bromide at dinner.  He's been seizure free for almost a year and a half....but it took us over a year to get the right mix of drugs.  We're just like 'brindle pack'...all the diagnostic stuff and then the neurologist just kept trying different doses of different drugs.   I completely understand how awful it is to live with the monster...and what joy now that it's pretty much controlled.  I felt I could never leave him alone since we have to run him to the ER if he seizes more than twice for a massive am't of valium.

There are lots of options out there for treatment!

Good luck!!

Nicole, I'm sooo happy for you!  Special has such a sweet-goofy-Newfie face!  I agree with everyone else:  she will settle in and learn the rules in no time.  They are so smart and want to please!  Where did she come from ?  What's her back ground?  How did she lose her eye? (isn't that why she's 'Special'?)

Extra kisses and drools from us to Cabeza for learning to share his family!!

« on: December 17, 2006, 02:10:55 AM »

I had migraines as a child and each one  of my children has had a least one as a wee thing.  I could always recognize it because of the extreme light sensitivity, the vomiting and noise sensitivity.  The kids are all fine now and seemed to out grow it.  I had them a lot growing up and when I was pregnant  Tongue!

I would think it would be good to run the symptoms by your pediatrican since there are good meds out there now.  Our home remedy is 7-UP and Excedrine when you get the very first sign.  That usually knocks it down before it gets too much worse.

Good luck!!

Jessica, please don't be embarrassed!!!  One thing I've learned from this group is that there is not a single person here who hasn't been through rough times and it has made them all kind, compassionate and thoughtful.  With all of us thinking this problem through, I'm sure we'll come up with some way to salvage the situation!

The important thing is that you want Izzy and Izzy is happy with you!  We'll just brain-storm!!!  You keep working on training!  He'll be great...I just know it!

Chester is on the 'wee' side as well.  He's only about 112 pounds and for a Newf his age, he should be closer to 130 - 140.  The good news is that he has so much more energy and moves far easier than any other Newf I've had....so I'm hoping that's an indication of how healthy he his and I'll get to have him for a really long time!

He and Binky could probably have a great time romping together!!!  Can you imagine the size of the puppies they could have (if Chester hadn't been snipped!).  Pocket Newfs!!! Grin Grin

No matter what, they are both adored!!!! Wink
