I think I will try the citronella collar with water in it

I have a citronella collar (the remote controlled one - not the barking one) for my newf and the citonrella refill is kind of like a compressed air can and you have to push the nozzle of the refill down in to this tiny little hole (kind of like putting air in your car tire) so I don't think that you'd be able to substitue water for the citronella.

If she is sensitive to smells then I would think that it wouldn't take much to train her that when she barks it makes a yucky smell that she didn't like and she wouldn't be so barky.

The reason we got the collar for Lucy is that she would want to go outside and then turn around and bark to get let back in and not stop until we let her back in (20 minutes).  It was really effective now she only barks once or twice and then sits there when she wants to be let in.  I highly recommend it.

I'm so excited I saw this thread.  I really really want to do therapy stuff with Lucy.  I haven't done to much research on it yet because we are still very far away from it being a possibility - we plan on starting basic obedience in a couple weeks and will be going as advanced as we can with her obedience.  Thanks for all the great information on her.  I will start dropping stuff around her and getting her used to that sort of thing!

I love those!  He looks like he is having a blast.  My parents have a Aussie that is about to cross the bridge - these picks make me remember his glory days!  Rocko is very handsome!

Thanks for all the input.  It's given me lots to consider and think over!  My girl LOOOOOOVES to play with other dogs which is what made me think about it in the first place.  As for the having enough room in the bed and on the couch, dogs aren't allowed on either in my house - so it wouldn't be a problem.  But I would definetly have enough food!!

I'm considering an older dog one that is young enough to still want to play with her but old enough to not have all the "puppy issues" that I just got out of with Lucy. LOL

Hi all!  I have a 6 month(ish) old newfy girl and I'm thinking I might want to get her a buddy.  I really like Great Danes.  Here's my question - would they live well together?  Lucy is ALWAYS warm.  I used to keep my thermostat at 73 but I've had to change my ways this winter and keep the temp around 65 because otherwise she just paces and pants and drives me insane!!  What kind of temperature requirements do Great Danes have?  Also, other than the temperature thing is there anything else breed specific that I should take into consideration?

Thanks!  You are all great!

I have my 6 month old Newfie pup on Innova Large Breed Adult and she loves it.  She's at a great weight with a healthy coat and a good energy level.  I highly recommend it.

WOW!  Thanks for all the input!  I will keep this all in mind as I start doing my research and test drives and all that.  And once I get it narrowed down I definitely will be bringing Lucy with me...just to make sure! And maybe she can use her newfie charm to get the salesman (or  saleswoman!) to give me a great deal.

Transporting & Traveling With Dogs / Suggestions for a new vehicle!

I will be getting a new vehicle this spring and thought I'd see if any of you have suggestions of vehicles that work great for you and your big paws.  My 6 month old newfy, Lucy, is doing fine right now in my VW Bug and the back seat folds down so she'll have quite a bit of room even when she's full grown but she'll be all I can fit in there. I was thinking of a Honda Element because you can just hose it out when it gets dirty on the inside and the seats fold up and it seems like it'd be pretty easy for her to get in and out of.  Any suggestions?

Food Discussion & Information / Re: What people-food does you dog NOT eat?
« on: December 21, 2006, 05:57:34 am »
Fun topic!  My husband and I were talking about this the other day.  Lucy will eat any people food but one - bananas.  It's hilarious! She LOVES snap peas as if they were steak and will scarf any fruit, veggie or carb imaginable and of course, meat.  But she will not not not eat a banana!  It's the first food I've seen her flat refuse, she won't even lick it.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Re: Dog eating poop....
« on: December 20, 2006, 07:23:43 am »
I am SO going to be trying the pinapple ASAP.  My 6 month old newfie, Lucy, LOOOOVES to munch the poo (her poo, the cat's poo, any poo will do!)  To top it off, she is burpy.  She'll come over to say hi and then inches from my face and burp the MOST HORRIBLE poo burp ever.  It is literally the worst smell I've ever smelled in my life.  So my husband and I will be shopping for some crushed pineapple tonight!

BTW we've learned that we can't leave her outside unattended b/c of her habit but every once in a while when we are in a hurry we let her out there and hope that she's not in a poo eating mood but 90% of the time she apparently is and sooner or later...poo burps and farts! GAG!

 :(

I am sick to my stomach.  I went and read some of the testimonials.  My heart hurts for those poor creatures stuck in that filth.

The interesting thing is I was looking at their website the other day and thought it was a sketchy organization. Their requirements are soo odd.  And then to find out all this other stuff.  I am so sad to know that they are calling themselves rescue...gross!
