1  Blog Discussion Forum / Blog Feedback & Discussion Board / Re: Working dogs not good family dogs « on: June 08, 2007, 02:39:48 PM » Did I read that right?  I have 3 Newfoundlands and have owned Saint Bernards in the past. Both Breeds are working dogs if there ever was one. A newf is known as a natural nanny to ALL children. At risk of sounding like a dingbat, they chose the dog in Peter Pan for a reason. My dogs would follow my son off a cliff. They adore all his friends including the ones I don't like! They are the worst watch dogs because they love people, even the ones that want to steal your T.V. A working dog needs a job. If they are left in kennels or alone in a yard for most of the time they will be destructive and develope bad behaviors. I was a nanny in college and the family I worked for had an Aussie. George was a wonderful family dog. He had a litter mate that lived 4 houses away and was an awful dog. The poor thing never left his dog run. The worst thing I've known a well mannered Aussie to do is heard the children into the corner of the yard. He did a great job rounding them up. This behavior is no diferent than my dogs pulling all the kids out of our pool at our last party. In and out they went. Elvis finally laid down on the diving board and kept gaurd. Stitch and Audrey decided it was more fun to play marco-polo! I believe one needs to understand WHY they do what they do.

Elvis does straight pumpkin 3X a week with his food and also once a day a dolop of plain yogart on his food. This has really been a BIG help. Pumpkin is a natural anti-nausiant too. I also put a little oatmeal in his food.

5  BPO Rescue Forum / Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / My heart is broken for 9 newfies! « on: June 06, 2007, 04:19:22 PM » I'm having trouble even writing this post. My eyes are filled with tears and I don't know where to start. I came upon a rescue group that siezed 9 newfs from a so called breeder home in eastern Oklahoma. They range from 4mos-3yrs in age, 5 female and 4 male. 8 are landseers and 1 is black. I know this happens. People get Newfs and then rehome them when they realize they get so big. People have their reasons. But I feel at times most humans are so unworthy to be graced with such a beautiful and gentle animal. A Newf "all the qualities of man, without his vises" So many at BPO have opened their homes to Newfs that an unworthy person neglected or simple didn't want. These saints are my heros. I just feel broken inside that someone that thought they were a breeder could have treated these gentle souls in such a manner. They will need a lot of medical care before they are available for adoption. I am fairly new to BPO, but I would imagine what little you all know of me so far, I am a huge advocate for my breed. We have fostered, work with local rescue educating on giant breed, nutrition, general care, training, show. You name it, I probably partake if it helps my breed. This just really got to me. I feel helpless. Usually when people treat animals like a pair of shoes they want to send to goodwill, it makes me angry. This was not the same, I feel sick like someone pinched my heart. So often we are only around fellow spoiled and pampered Newfs, just like ours. It is all too easy to take for granted that all Newfs don't have this life. I forget and this was a sad reminder. As I look at the kids sleeping at my feet right now, all 3 so peaceful, full tummy, brushed coat. I can't help thinking of 9 Newfies in Oklahoma. If anyone wants info on these 9, please PM me. I am sorry this was so long Have you hugged your large breed today?

In germany and most of the E.U. they are considered 2 seperate breeds also. They have a slightly smaller frame and the heads are a bit narrower with a longer muzzle. Because of this, they created a slightly altered breed standard for show purposes. The beauty of each would be appreciated without emphasizing the slight diferences. In every other regard a Landseer is surely a Newf. Just a color variation. Audrey's papers have it listed as color# 202 black and white. Newfs are said to come from a Tibetin Mastiff and a Great Pyrn.

You are upset, justly so! I have lots of lawyerly advice I can give. I would need some info to get you going in the proper direction. Please let me know if I can PM you some questions and go from there. You are on the right direction with the certified letter. Be sure any e-mail you send her, you also cc yourself and one other person. If she is a registered breeder with AKC or a member of NCA, notify them ASAP. In order to breed under Bylaws of AKC you must maintain the integrity of those very Bylaws. Not to alarm you, but both Elvis and Stitch came from Germany. They have 10 generation of CH pedigree and an EU passport registered with 5 countries. When I spoke with AKC, all they needed was the papers and they sent the registration without issue. Never did they say they needed DNA. OOOH! I'm so mad for you I just want my dogs to lift a leg on people like that!

I take the boys to the groomer for this. I think I'm just so worried I'll do it wrong and hurt them. I have no issues with any other part of grooming. I brush teeth, clean ears, trim a knot away from privates! Oooooh! But I've yet to have the confidence to clip nails.

When we moved to North Carolina last year from Germany the dogs where so unhappy in the heat. They slept all day next to the air conditioners.  I started considering a shave so they would be more comfortable. Called our breeder, spoke with someone at NCA. Based on our climate, we decided it was a bad idea. The next week I was at our Vet for a hot spot and they where doing CPR on a gorgeous PYR that was shaved the week prior. The poor guy had heat stroke. I drove home crying and thinking that could have been one of my guys. The climate in Maine is pretty mild, so you should be OK. For anyone in the HOT states, I was told that a Newf coat will insulate them from the heat like an igloo. I don't know how true that is, but I'm too scared to find out.
