oh, what a big sweet baby.  you and he are so lucky to have found each other!  you will surely find this to be a super source of advice and encouragement as you and your pupper enter his golden years.

FAQs about puppies / Re: i have an antisocial boog

from what i have read, there are specific things that you can do to help socialize a fearful puppy:
never force new people on him, it will just freak him out more
try and whenever possible give him situations where he can approach new people at his own pace and be rewarded when he does so
if there are things he especially enjoys, try to associate those with the new people  (hey! fun things happen for me when new people come around!)
i have also read that you should try to avoid being TOO reassuring when your pup is acting scared, because they may interpret this as praise for the fearful behaviour.
don't know if any of this helps, hope so..
good luck

i have had really good luck with headcollars with heidi, as of yet they do not stop her getting excited about things but they do stop her dragging me everywhere...a nd i think bit by bit she is improving on the squirrels, other dogs, etc.. and as someone said you do have to take them out frequently to get them used to this stuff, otherwise it will continue to be novel and exciting, and who can blame them for getting all hyped up if they haven't seen it for months? and classes are always a good idea, if nothing else you get to see other people's cute dogs..you have the opportunity to do all this now while they are young and impressionable, don't be in my position where you are trying to do remedial"let's not be psycho today" work!=)  i am sure you will sort it out, good luck!

Yay!  nothing more fun than watching a handsome pooch enjoy himself!  although i admit to being somewhat disappointed, in my little black heart i had hoped that this was an actual news item and not a youtube video..

welcome!  I am fairly new here too, but have really enjoyed hearing about everyone's pooches.  i'm sure i'll enjoy hearing about jewel too, he is a beautiful boy. i am mom to Heidi, 1 and 1/2 year old German Shepherd, trained in squeaky toy destruction and general mayhem.

why would these people even want another dog?  "are you planning on keeping him in the house when he's full grown"..well, what's the point of having a pooch if you can't enjoy his company?  no wonder you're frustrated they are just not absorbing anything you say to them are they?  and people think DOGS are hard to train...

Oh, I forgot to mention that I have another friend who has a boxer and she wants to breed him "ones" because her boyfriend wants to see "how dogs do it"!!! Idiots!
wow.  y'know, there's probably something on the discovery channel or at least the internet for people who are into that sort of thing.  seriously, where do people get the idea that this is just an experiment or a hobby that has no responsibilite s or consequences?

poor pupper, i'm sorry to hear she has had such a hard time of it.  it is great that this vet is actually making the effort and keeping you in the loop.  hope everything continues improving

yeah, i think maybe Heidi would just chew on the ends of that sucker.  or fling it around and destroy something, which i'm trying to prevent...neat toy though, the sheer selection of dog toys in the universe never ceases to amaze me

do you suppose they would be willing to bring some treats with them when they drop by unannounced, or could you make some available where they could find them?  would that reassure him at all and would they even do it?

42
whoo-hoo!  finally a treat dispensing toy that actually takes Heidi some time and effort to empty!  little noisy, though....*crash*  *bang*  *chomp chomp chomp*  he he..i'm so happy....

ohhh..so cute....and the puppies are pretty adorable too

holy cow, your previous vet sounds like the biggest turd.  happily it seems like this one is much better.  just having them care about your pets shouldn't be that hard.  now that your pupper is getting COMPETENT care hopefully she (and you)will feel better soon
