Collars, crates, & other cool things / Re: Need Suggestions for Toys
« on: September 18, 2007, 05:29:11 pm »
i cant help on any escaping or destroying, i dont have that problem. but i take my pup with me to petsmart and let her pick out her own toys. a lot of times, if i pick something out for her, she wont play with it, but if i take her there and she picks it out, she never leaves it alone. she tends to pick out anything that is a stuffed animal. she likes soft toys that she can play with AND cuddle with. she also loves rawhide, pig ears, etc. but i just found it easier if i her do it herself.

personally, i dont mean to offend. but i think rolling a dog (be it any breed) on their back to instill "authority" is going to prevoke behavioral problems. i can only see this prevoking more agression almost as if you would be "challenging" them. my pupperz growls a lot, but its nothing nasty, she just growls to be vocal. her bark actually scares herself though so she doesnt like to do it lol. but she will growl for attention, when cuddling, etc. i think you need to evaluate what the growl meant, was your dog trying to just be vocal, or did it simply want to be left alone. i think everyone needs to understand, with a dog, be whatever size, sometimes, they DONT want you up in their face. let me put it this way: if you were laying down relaxing, and someone came and grabbed your face and put theirs in it, how would you feel? i think dogs need a personal space as much as people do, and it needs to be respected just as much. if my pup wants me to get all kissy kissy with her, she lets me know, if not... i leave her alone, and i dont force that. i hope this might help you understand and work out your problem!

Alright, i thought it was just me that had little miss spider nails! she always looked like she needed them done every 2 or 3 weeks, but i was afraid of doing them "too often". im so glad shes good about it.

37
How often do you guys get your pupperz nails clipped? i do Chloes myself, shes awesome about it and gives me no fuss at all, so i guess im lucky (i have read some of your stories and i im so happy i dont have to go through that) Anyway, Chloes nails seem to grow like weeds, and i dont know how often i should be cutting them. is there such a thing as "too often"? and are they just growing like weeds because she is and once shes full grown they will slow down? i feel like a dope asking this, but oh well! thanks guys!

well, unfortunately im no real big help there, i dont have that problem so i cant help. the only thing i do want to say is that i know the first step to correcting that, and it starts with you. you can get upset or nervous. what happens then is you get extra adrenaline and hormones running through your body and you being to put out smells, you cant smell these, but the dog can. and thats how the dog can tell youre nervous about it, and that can only make the situation worse. its good that you know you need to get control of this now, once theyre big, theyre big... and theres no going little again lol. its so much easier when theyre small to correct these things. good luck to you!

when it comes to food, thats a personal choice i think. and partly a pups choice. the only thing i want to say is check out the great dane lady's site for some info... and i STRONGLY support using probiotics when switching foods or even all the time. its a huge help when switching! makes it easier on their bellies for sure!

i hope she doesnt have to go back on them as well (and my bank account agrees) :D as for all natural meds, theres really nothing she needs to be on right now, and i dont want anything that will complicate the one med she is on right now for pain, and her antibiotic. i dont know if you know, but her anitbiotic is for her pyoderma, so she needs to be on that, hers was actually severe... but her rimodyl she needs to stay on right now untill im sure we are getting over this disease without relapsing. then i will slowly wean her off that. other than that... she will be seeing some joint supplaments like glucosamine in the future, and mostly everything i can do to protect her joints and bones and keep her healthy. just try to protect from any HD or ED, arthritis, etc. but like i said, at this moment im not putting her on anything because of the meds shes still on. but difinately in the future! ;D

you know, in a way shes lucky to have us (not being cocky) because a lot of other people out there wouldnt have given her the chance we did with her disease, especially with what her initial prognosis was... and she wouldnt be here now. but mostly, we are soooo lucky to have her. shes showed us what its like to have unconditional love even when it seems life is at its worst, and feels like its never going to get better. shes tought me about hope, and to never give up. shes been such an inspiration to me, and other people who know her. shes my world, and everything i do i think about her. wherever i am, whatever im doing, its about her. im always thinking, when im away from her, "how is she" "what is she doing" "how is she feeling". and already at 6 months old, she knows my car and my boyfriends truck. as soon as we pull in, if shes outside, she runs right to the car wagging her tail and showers us with kisses when she gets to us. i love that feeling, that someone is waiting for me when i get home, who misses and cares about me. even if im only gone for 5 minutes, shes so happy to see me when i get back. its so amazing. i wouldnt trade her for the world!

That's wonderful news!  :D Have you thought of going the "all natural" route with her, herbal suppliments ect?

Nina

not yet. maybe later on. its too soon right now, but later on she will definately get joint supplaments!

NOTHING! if anything, shes gotten better! you can see her muscle is really starting to build up now, shes not walking so hunched up anymore, and her legs are spred apart more like they should be behind, rather than stuck together shuffling along. the other day she went down the stairs. my mom was taking care of her, and normally i dont let her do stairs, i carry her, because i dont want her to fall and get hurt. well my mother cant carry her, shes too heavy for her, so she had no choice. and my mom told me she went down the stairs wonderfully. shes running and playing fetch and jumping around like a pup. people have gone from saying
"whats wrong with her!?" to saying "shes so cute, but shes so skinny!" so now she looks like a normal dog, just skinny. lol. so shes off of her Tramadol, i wasnt going to take her off it to fast, but somehow (i blame my man) she ended up running out of 3 pills in one day (i think he dropped them down the sink and he wont tell me!). and the vet was closed when i found out late saturday night, and obviously they were closed sunday. so she had no choice but to be off of them. and she was fine! so im leaving her off and just getting a refill incase anything happens to her that i need them. shes still on the Rimodyl, and im going to keep her on that for a while more to make sure shes alright and then VERY slowly decrease that one. so far so good! its been 2 and a half days without the tramadol and everything is fine! her pyoderma is clearing up with her antibiotics as well. SOOOoooOOOO! yay!
