I read what linda arndt said, and went and bought her eagle pack today... 44 bucks later...lol... but i dont really care. shes worth every penny. i was talking to the vet that takes care of my moms horse, she used to be an all animal vet but now just works with large animals. i told her about using Chloromycetin, she told me right away "oh that wont do anything thats just an antibiotic" but my thoughts is, if she doesnt know whats causing the HOD, this person has had a very great success rate using it, then what could it hurt and how could she say its not going to do anything... its just so frusterating. its so hard to decide whats going to be the best thing for her. i started her with the eagle pack and using the honey and apple cidar vinegar tonic.. she seems to like it

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: Cropping Newborn Puppies' Ears

Im not going to crop my pups ears, and i was never planning on it. I just dont think its fair to them to go through that. And as far as docking goes, I interned at a vets office and a litter was brought in to be docked... holy crud, i wanted to cry. it was like they just took nail clippers (they werent but its something that looks similar) and clipped them right off. they all gave a yelp and whimpered for a while. it was kind of gross too... little puppy tails laying all over the table.. eew.... i think thats cruel too... but thats just me... i dont agree with any of that stuff unless its for a health reason or something. my pup has a kink in her tail from playing with her littermates when she was young and if it begins to cut off nerves in her tail as she grows i will have to get it docked or she will just chew it off... i just hope that doesnt happen!

My vet told me to go with large breed eukanuba puppy. he told me that was the best way to go, and i checked with a second vet on that, and they agreed.

HOD in danes is very commonly due to vaccine reactions, so when you say your vet at first thought it was vaccine reaction and now has diagnosed it as HOD, it makes me think that your vet isn't connecting the two.

thanks a lot.. i was lucky enough to connect the two. lol i knew that they had found HOD acts up especially after a distemperment vaccine. my vet seems to know what hes talking about, but he did encourage me to do my own research, and i have. i even suggest drugs i think might help him. even injectable.. i already have the needles and syringes and stuff because i have racehorses, and the vets arent always there when you need them. my vet has been good to me, unfortunately hes on vaca this week and i had to see his replacement. but she was very nice and seemed to know a lot about it because she had taken those kinds of cases before. the only thing i cant find out is if the disease will definately last untill shes mature, or if theres anyway it can be stopped ahead of that time.

HOD is hypertrophic osteodystrohy. .. what is happening is her bones are growing too rapidly and shes getting pain and inflamation in her joints. its also accompanied by a high temperature, not eating or drinking, etc. for chloe is seems to effect her back legs the most. i have to hold her back end up to pee or else she colapses and urinates on herself because it hurts too bad to squat. shes such an angel,  we never had problems with her with anything, and the vets love her, they told me how wonderful she was to have overnight when i picked her up. they said she just does anything she needs to do, and just wants to be loved. (like she doesnt get enough of THAT!)

My Great Dane Chloe was diagnosed with HOD. It started up after she got her second set of shots. She came home and started a fever and stopped eating and drinking. She went back to the vet and he thought it was a reaction to the vaccinations, but when it acted up again the next week, and much worse he ran tests and told me she had HOD. She had to stay overnight with an IV and other meds. She had had a temp of 105.8 when she went in. I cried when he told me what she had, i knew her puppyhood was practically ruined. Since then shes had to have her medication changed three times because she didnt have any progress on them. she wakes up crying at night for her meds because shes in pain, and its hard for her to sleep, eat, or do much of anything when it acts up. she does have her good days though when its like nothing is wrong with her, but they are few and far apart. my heart breaks every day, shes my baby, and means so much to me..i hate seeing her like this

I refused to get my danes ears cropped. i think theres a right to feel bad about doing it. think about it this way, would you want someone cutting yours apart and taping them up and being annoying? when it was done back in the day for hunting that was one thing, but i feel its just cruel to do it now. i think the cropping should be eliminated, like it is in some parts of the world. im not trying to sound mean or pushy, but i think its uncalled for. just think about it this way, would YOU want it done to YOURSELF?

are you using a scent remover when you clean up the messes?  When i was training my baby we would clean up the mess with a pet enzyme remover, then spray the floor with white vinegar. the vinegar is supposed to act like a territorial thing. plus they dont like the smell. we also crate trained. i cant help you too much with the crying, we got lucky, from the first night she never creid and always sleeps through the night unless her HOD is acting up, then she cries for her medication. and when it comes to the weight, go by what the bag says to feed. and make sure you feed a good brand of food. i feed eukanuba large breed puppy. large breed dogs are very special and need different ratios of things than "normal" dogs. get a food that doesnt have a lot of fillers like purina does, and many of the low cost foods. a good food is going to cost more, but its worth it for a healthy pup, right?
