Food Discussion & Information / Re: Raw Hides
« on: December 02, 2007, 03:52:14 pm »
I have bought pig ears before for my first dog, they seem to be just about the same thing as the rawhide, but they dont expand I guess....this is so confusing.

Hard too because I grew up with dogs that lived to be elderly that ate rawhides everyday but I guess there were not so many manufacturers back then?

Puppy seems bored today...must be the weather....she has already attacked the dishtowl in the kitched and the stuffed tiger in the living room (its a chair) and is now working on the old dog....poor Buddy he is such a Saint with her!

Do you know if they say on the package if they have formeldehyde in them? I just bought a huge pack at Sams Club. I give them each on probably twice a week. They are the rolled raw hides.

My big dog I worry about most because he can and will swallow the smaller pieces so we pick them up pronto when they get small, the puppy seems to enjoy chewing them after he has ;)

OK so all my life my dogs have had raw hides. I do not buy the ones with knuckles and when they get to a small size I throw them away.

I was told by someone that they are totally against feeding rawhides to their dogs and its the new wrong thing to do.

What do you all do? They seem to be saving my furniture right now! :)

How long does it take before a BC ears have sustained the shape they will be at adulthood? Our little girl is around 12+ weeks and at one point the right ear looked like it would be up, now its down, the left iear is now slanting to the side. While I know its puppy stage and sort of find it endearing my husband says she looks weird ;)

I cannot remember how long it takes to see the real ears done?

Blog Feedback & Discussion Board / Re: Working dogs not good family dogs
« on: November 27, 2007, 03:30:02 pm »
Wow I was suprised to come to this board which is very new to me and find this thread. I just got a Border Collie pup two weeks ago. She was born Sept 4.

While I fully understand her requirements for her breed I am shocked that some people think this hard working breed would not work for families?

I too believe that good training is at the root of any family dog. If your family is not close and the kids spend more time away from home at friends and activities than they do at home then this dog probably will be hard for you. However in our case we own a small farm, we have three children that are home that help take care of her.

She has not offered to "herd" them yet but you can rest assured that this will be corrected. The only thing she has herded so far is the cat and its been a small herd so she can touch her nose and that was the end of it.

Anyway I certainly hope that like with every other breed there are the worst and the best case scenarios. Education is the final factor that judges if these dogs are "good" family dogs or not.

Border Collie Discussions & Pictures / BC Puppy, Question about No Bite
« on: November 26, 2007, 03:56:08 pm »
Lucy is doing very well. She is almost 12 weeks now. She is really smart and learns things very quickly.

I am wondering your version of the no bite command.

I was taught way back 12 years ago when we got our old dog that if he put his teeth on you you immediately grab the nose and close it and say "no bite" sternly. This worked great with him. He is a Dane/Lab cross and to this day has never growled at us.

Now Lucy on the other hand has decided she is faster then the kids and will continue to play bite when they tell her no. Part of this is establishing the alpha, they just dont have it with her yet.

Does anyone have any ideas? Is there a better way with BC to get their attention and help them focus on the positive part of play?

We redirect with a toy which helps, sometimes she just gets into one of her bursts of running play and jumps up and nips. Its just play but if she were full grown this could cause a slight problem and we want to nip this in the bud so to speak :)

Introduce Yourself to the Forum / Re: New Border Collie
« on: November 26, 2007, 05:55:23 am »
Thanks for the welcome :)

We live in Maine on a small farm. We dont have cows or sheep but do have horses and chickens.

My daughter and I ride our horses, and show them. They are both retired Standardbred race horses (the ones that pulled carts racing)which make great riding horses when they retire :)

We are looking for any advice with our new addition. Its been 12 years since we had a puppy and boy its exciting and sometimes stressful :)

I want to teach her the right way to do things especially with the kids. Seems like training ways have changed since 12 years ago when we took obedience. Does everyone use food now to teach their dogs?

This is Lucy, she was born Sept 4th. She is our newest addition. I have always wanted a Border but waited because our children were young. Now that they are 13, 11 and 8 they are old enough to help us work with this active dog and help train her.

We also have an aged gentleman dog. He is a Dane/Lab cross. Best dog, is loving Lucy and gets along with her great. He is 12 and his name is Buddy.

Here they are their first few days together.
