Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / Re: Question about rescues
« on: April 28, 2008, 05:24:44 pm »
I live in BC Canada.
There are rescues who advertise all the time.
I think they would do so in order to prevent an animal
from ever entering the system.  In our province we are mostly
no kill in our shelters (only when necessary-although I know exceptions).  There are many breed specific rescues out there.
Take FORM for example.  Friends Of Rescued Mastiff's.  They are breed specific, and for the most part do not take other breeds in.
I think the majority of the public do not know there are rescues working outside of shelters.  Advertising in the paper is a way for them to get their name out there.  I know I didn't know such things existed till I got involved with the SPCA.  Where I am we work with breed specific rescues, especially pitty's.  Always a whole wack of them around here.

I have NO experience with Leo's!
I can only tell you that with Beau I was told to be very careful.
Too much exercise is not good for the giants.
I used to take him into the front yard and play chase!
Not me chasing him (didn't want him to run away instead of coming to me especially when older) but him chasing me.
I would go hide behind a tree or rock and yell out "follow me!"
Then he would be all over the place looking for me.  I would run when he found me and he would follow.  Then of course he got a treat for being a good boy.  I would do about 3 of these a day and maybe just walk him for 10 min at his own pace.
So far so good, he's 2 now and no problems.

I found this web site:  http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/reviews/leonbergers.html

Providing the proper balance of exercise. Young Leonbergers need enough exercise to keep them lean and healthy, but not so much that their soft growing bones, joints, and ligaments become over-stressed and damaged. Adult Leonbergers need more exercise to keep them in shape, but not in hot or humid weather for fear of overheating. The proper amount of exercise can be difficult to regulate in giant breeds.

Since you have to minimize their exercise, young Leonbergers can be very rambunctious. They will romp with uncoordinated gawkiness all over your house. You need to substitute extra quantities of companionship and supervision. Otherwise, left alone, young Leonbergers become bored and destructive -- and their powerful jaws can literally destroy your living room.

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Re: Corbyn- This is not such good news

I had a few minutes and realized Paige was having issues with her email so I wanted to take the few seconds to clear something up. I don't want anyone to have the wrong impression of what occured that day.
I would NEVER EVER EVER leave my babies while the vet is working on them.

I hope you didn't think I was pointing any fingers!!!
I'm sorry!!  Please, I didn't mean to give the wrong impression.
I was darned angry at the vet for hurting your baby!
I meant that when I go I try to always be there as the vets' seem to think that because our babies are large, they are less fragile.
Open mouth, insert foot.  Sorry again.

I'm so sorry to hear about your Buster.
And yes, I'll tell my babies how much I love them.
RIP Buster-good journey to the bridge.

Hi!  Never heard of that ointment, but found a web site for you.

http://handicappedpets.com/acc/leggings/#hy

or

http://www.dogleggs.com/index.cfm

Whatever you do, don't let your vet drain it!
It can get infected.  Other mastiff owners suggest it takes anywhere up to 6 months for it to go away.
Does Titan like to sleep on the hard tile floor for the cold?
Hygromas are caused from the elbow hitting the ground hard.
Is it possible for him to sleep on a foamy or something soft?
So far (crossing fingers) Beau has not gotten any.  Luke (being more mature) likes to slide down to his sleeping position.
Oh, and massaging it is supposed to help.

I was going to suggest doing a day-care type of situation
with another child, or how about getting a part time job at night?  A very good friend of mine had 2 boys 3 months apart (yeah someone told her you couldn't get pregnant while nursing!)  Anyway, she worked her job during the day, and her husband worked late shift (till like 3 am) and the rest of the time they both looked after the kids.  They could not afford babysitters, and I only sat occasionally when she really
needed the help.
Good for you for wanting to stay home!!

Your water looks soooo clean!!

I also bought my kiddie pool at Wal-Mart, but the dogs don't lay in it, they drink it! ;D
I have to keep emptying it, or Beau would blow up!

Our vet did the range of motion thing with Beau the day after we got him at 8 weeks old.  This did not cause him pain.
I am thinking it's the shots.

Hope she feels better soon.
Just watch your little cuddle muffin.

Some animals can be extremely sensitive to vaccines.
Just watch her very closely over the next few days.
Maybe an ice pack at the place where she had the shots.
Poor baby-treat time!!!

Old English Mastiff Pictures / Beau's age/size progression
« on: April 23, 2008, 11:03:03 am »
I love looking at how much our babies change!

Hope you all like age/size progression photo's.
When we first got Beau, he loved to sleep on the cat bed.
He claimed it as his own.
I found that cat bed a few days ago. No, it didn't shrink!!
Here are the results!   :D

Beau at 8 weeks old - first day home-25.5 pds

Beau at 10 weeks - 36 pds

Now at 4 months - 70 pds

2 years - currently 206 pds

Old English Mastiff Discussions / Re: How big is too big?

Hi welcome!
Is it possible for you to post some more pics of your dog?
I have a 7 yr old male that is 160 pds, and eats between 4-5 cups plus additives.  My 2 yr old male is 206 pds and is now eating 10 cups plus additives.
When you stand over her, can you see her ribs? Does she taper from her ribs to her back thigh?  I can't really tell from the picture.
Every dog will be different.  Some are smaller boned and some are very large.  My 2 year old is larger than both his parents.  It will also depend on the exercise that she's getting.
There is a breeder near where I live in Canada that has a 275 pd stud dog.  His females also go between 210 -240.  Now his dogs are very true to the original breed and he calls them 'typey'  He gets his breeding stock from Europe.

Here is a mastiff weight chart, but remember, it's just guideline.

Boy that reeks of incompetence!
I would get a lawyer to draw up a letter threatening to sue the vet if he didn't cover the extra costs.

I have always gone into the office with my pets.
I have even been in the back to hold them thru special procedures.  When Beau had a wart removed on his elbow, I sat with him on the floor holding his head while they worked on him.  He was pretty good.
Find a vet that will allow you in with your pet.

Boy that burns my butt!
Poor, poor puppy!

Oooohhhhh! I love age progressions!
What a beauty!
I love the older dogs.
They have all that energy out of them.
And they are now the perfect dog.
(maybe I've just had the dogs from h*ll!)
