Medical Conditions & Diseases / Kiya seizure update
« on: February 04, 2006, 07:03:01 pm »
Hi everyone. Im very sad to say, Kiya had a siezure this morning around 6am. Everything seemed to be fine & I was hoping  we would be reducing the dose of phenobarbitol soon. I'll keep an eye on her & Im calling the vet tomorrow, we'll have blood drawn to check her levels. Im so disheartened. My poor girl. I think the drugs helped her, the seizure didn't seem as violent & long as the first time. She didn't pee on herself it took about a half hour for her to really calm down.
Oh well. We'll take one day at a time & do all the fun things we do & be happy.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Bicycling with dogs
« on: January 18, 2006, 04:52:52 pm »
I was really tired of walking every morning, so I dug out the mountain bike, put air in the tires. I take both Apache & Kiya into the trails & Im loving it. We still have some kinks to work out but Im thrilled, it sure beats walking. They get a better work out (so do I). I could let Apache off leash but, a story about a womens dog getting caught in a hunters trap & dying not too long ago, no thanks I'll deal with leashes. Anyone else ride a bicycle with dogs?

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Soft claws for dogs
« on: December 26, 2005, 11:38:16 am »
Has anyone ever tried soft claws for dogs or any product like it that would help with sliding on bare floors? Since we've been cooped up in the house for the winter Ive noticed them playing more inside & sliding around way too much for my liking. I found this product on a site "all pets considered" & it was developed by a vet sounds like it could be good.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / I cant go on vacation

Hubby just doesnt get it. After all that has happened between Chazzy's pinched nerve & Kiya's seizures, I feel that going on a ski trip New Years Eve (4 nights) is out of the question, its less than a month away. Granted I have SEVERE separation issues from my animals but under these circumstances its justified. Last night I said we could go mid January, its cheaper anyway. Of course he said he found a (3) night package deal for new years eve the same price as mid jan. Well my mistake was to say ok I'll go for 3 nights but not 4. That was it bla, bla bla on how I always want to cut the trip short & how his life doesnt revolve around the dogs. I know its me, Im rediculous. His sister will take care of everyone & I have a friend who can check on them. If it were up to me I probably would never go away. I don't know how to break myself from this. Good thing I don't have human kids.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Seizures

Kiya had a siezure yesterday afternoon, it was horrible, she's ok now. All the bloodwork came up good. They took a stomach xray, there was something, don't know what, they induced vomitting only a little grass came up. Cant say if that caused the siezure or not. Im waiting to hear from my vet as to what we should do for further testing. I was so scared I really thought I was going to loose her. Billy wasn't home all I could do was try to tell myself to remain calm, I held her head & paw & comforted her, that was all I could do. It lasted forever but Im guessing 1-2 minutes, Shes 18months, her breeder never had any siblings or mom go thru this, he's contacting the sir's owner.
Anyone else ever experience this?

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Difficult decision
« on: November 08, 2005, 04:53:35 pm »
Chazzy our 9 year old GSD is in pretty bad shape. She has a degeneritive nerve disease on her spine, artritis all over her spine. She was a rescue from a breeder.Anyway all in all she still wants to play & hobbles along as she always has. Till sunday afternoon. I took my horse out for about 1-1/2 hours, I came back & she was dragging her hind quarters on the ground. Our conclusion was that one of the other dogs must have rammed into her & broke her hip. With all her issues we assumed the worst. I brought her to the vet on monday morning to be put to sleep. We all said our goodbyes. I couldnt take off from work & I trust them. I also assumed I would be putting her down. Well Dr. called & said they took an xray, gave her cortizone, & pills for home, she seems able to walk. Ok great I'll pick her up. The bill was only $170, Im not rich but I know what it could have been in an emergency hospital. Well I go into the back with doc to get her. The tech takes her out of the crate, she cant walk & needed to be helped with a towel to hold her rear end up. Well I figure shes stiff, all day in a crate, tile floors, of course she can't walk.
I get home & you can imagine caring for a 90lb dog who cant stand on her own let alone walk.
This was monday night. Tuesday morning I called & spoke to my vet, made arrangements to bring her thursday night to be put to sleep. I don't want her to suffer. She does not appear to be in pain. She has only cried in fustration when she cant get up to go in another room with us. So I have plastic with big towels that I move her from the kitchen to the livingroom then at night in her spot by my bed. She did not budge one inch from how I laid her down in her bed last night. I left her in the kitchen this morning. My husband just called, she was in the livingroom when he got home. He took her out & she stood on her own & walked a bit. I have called off thursday nights appointment at the vets. Please also keep in mind since sunday night Chazzy has pee'd herself several times, Ive done a ton of laundry so now I only but her front end on blanket/towel & hind end on papers. Billy said she didn't do anything today.
I really need to let this all out. The last few years I have learned a lot about loosing beloved pets. I am ok with her going to the bridge, she has friends there.
Thanks,
Carolyn :-[ :-[

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Please be careful with gates
« on: October 05, 2005, 10:48:04 pm »
Just found out last night that Apache's brother Logan was hit by a car. There were 4 dogs playing together in the yard & some how the gate got opened & it happened. Clip your gates.  I don't care how well trained they are, I don't think I'll ever let them off lead. This is the 2nd sibbling to be lost this way so heartbreaking.

Shiloh Shepherd Discussions & Pictures / Apache's echocardiogram GOOD!
« on: September 21, 2005, 03:14:11 pm »
I feel so much better knowing there are NO abnormalities showing with Apache's heart. Now I won't feel bad telling him to "get up pachy" when he lags a bit behind & I'd like to increase our distance. As for my Kiya girl positive on lymes still waiting for the uti results.

Shiloh Shepherd Discussions & Pictures / Waiting for vet's results
« on: September 21, 2005, 09:43:56 am »
I just dropped Apache off at the vet for a echo cardio gram.  Some of his sibblings have heart issues I would rather be safe than sorry. Also finally got a urine sample from Kiya & were testing her for Lyme's (I'll be shocked if shes negitive).
I also asked about annual vaccines, depending on the dog they will be extending to 3 year boosters. In my case going out on the trails & all the exposure to different things & other animals she suggested that I do puppy shots, & at least the first & second year boosters & of course rabbies. I'll see Spring '06 if Apache & Chazzy will get any shots then.
I have lots to do but I'll try to get his results up tonight. My poor baby I miss him & he's only been away 2 hours!

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Biospot
« on: September 09, 2005, 02:35:08 pm »
Good product or waste of money? $70 VS $25 for 2 months 3 dogs. I need to order flea/tick stuff. Frontline & the others are so expensive. I'd really like to save a few bucks but like they say "you get what you pay for". Input greatly appreciated.

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Article in Newsday about "core" vaccines
« on: August 10, 2005, 12:27:30 pm »
I finally got the article I mentioned a while back. Maine had a law for rabies shots to be given every 2 years, they just changed the law to 3 years. A yellow lab developed a mast cell tumor on the injection site from the booster. The owner did research about reactions which include allergies & cancer. She pushed for legislation requiring vets to disclose the benifits & risks of vaccines as well as intervals of immunity. A bill mandating written disclosure was introduced, but was tabled this year by Maines Agriculture, Consrvation & Forest Comittee, which opted instead to see if vets would educate clients on thier own... The American Animal Hospital Association recommended "core" vaccines such as parvo & distemper only every 3 years for adult dogs. Veterinary epidemiologist Ron Schultz of the university of Wisconsin-Madison goes further suggesting that a proper immunization in puppy-hood can last a lifetime for those same diseases.
The story ends with stateing the dog's tumor was removed & the owner sought out a homeopathic vet who prescribed an organic diet & other than Maines state mandated rabies every 3 years - no more vaccines.
So any comments about this would be greatly appreciated. Every spring my vet comes to my house does the 2 horses, 3 dogs & 2 cats, for what ever annual shots are needed  (I choke when I get my bill).

German Shepherd Discussions / Strange behavior Kiya & bee spray
« on: August 05, 2005, 07:16:03 am »
I'll try to make a long story short. Last night I had to spray a corner of my house near the roof with bee spray. I got a small hive last week but they must be getting in thru a crack. There were at least 10 bees hanging out on the eave, hubby is alergic. So I put the dogs in the house, put paper down so all I had to do was pick it up (don't want them sniffing the spray). Quite a while later I let the dogs out before we go to bed. All Kiya would do was bark, with that rolling bark & she wouldn't stop. She kept looking at the roof. I didn't want to baby her with "its ok" kinda stuff, so we firmly "knock it off". She continued this morning when we got up & went out side. Apache & Chazzy don't seem to be upset. Last year we had a paper wasp hive in a tree & she did the same thing barking & acting weird. Any one else ever experience something like this?
