Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: Need BPO Help
« on: April 13, 2008, 10:52:02 am »
Hugs to you and your sweet rescue doggie who is suffering from these issues along with you!

I am new here, so my ideas will not  be coming from any big dog experience, but rather, generalized canine and *animal* experience. Here are just a few things to run through in your mind. If any one of them puts a light of possibility on, you can take it to your vet.

Again, I don't have a solution for this...but I'm open to share possible ideas that run through my mind.

1) Dehydration.  Unfortunately, dehydration is a big catch 22 at times...becaus e your dog is constantly voiding leaky feces, she may not be able to hold in her liquids enough to stay hydrated, based on the frequency you're describing. Her diarrhea may have initially started because of one thing, and now could *continue* for another...dehy dration being one of the possibilities. Even if she is drinking a lot, it sounds like it's coming back out. Is she drinking normally?  In OTHER animal circles...and again, I just want to clarify I am NOT professing to know whether or not this works in your dog's particular case...severe diarrhea will call for a half Pedialyte, half water solution offered as needed to remedy the emergency.  Keep in mind your vet will need to tell you whether this is okay for YOUR dog or not.  There  could also be a problem with nutrients not even being absorbed if they are passing so quickly with the diarrhea regularly.  Nutrition lacking is often a source of mood and behavior problems as well.

2) The meds themselves!  Often, sulfa drugs and probiotics can wreck havoc on a body's system, and it can be hard to "catch back up" to normal stool consistency.  If you haven't already (and you may have), you might even talk with the doctor about taking her OFF the meds for a week or two to see if this helps in any way by the following week. Be very aware that steroids *absolutely* affect behavior and mood over time in both animals AND people...even a short 5 day course of steroids can bring about severe and lasting mood swings until the steroids are not only stopped, but completely out of the system.

3) Anxiety/nervousness.  Could it be possible that this sweet rescue doggie loves you very much and is literally making herself sick worrying about when you'll come back for her?  One of our small dogs, Harvey, is a rescue.  When we first got him, he was so badly neglected and abused that he did not even know how to be inside (he was forced outside and never allowed in, amongst other things). We attempted to crate train him and found that he would have horrible diarrhea IN his crate whenever we left him.  A neighbor let us know that he never, ever stopped crying or barking when we left either....but when we put a diaper on him and let him roam around the house and be with Oscar, our other little dog, he stopped having diarrhea instantly and permanently! :)  One of the best ways to combat animal anxiety is to create a solid, well adhered to routine that stays the same...very consistent...d aily.  This would include everything from location of food dishes, time of first bathroom and wake up, time of meals, time for play, time for sitting around with the family, and time for bed.  Over time, the animal can relax more because s/he knows what comes next...and can remember what the routine is comfortably, thus lessening the anxiety. Separation anxiety itself can be treated differently but this routine schedule format DOES help in many cases!

4) Allergies. What type of food does she presently eat?  What are her treats? What are her supplements, if any?  She could possibly have a problem with *something* in her food intake.  I would recommend talking with your vet about an elimination trial to determine what, if anything, could be a culprit here. In an elimination trial diet, you take away all but the very simplest, purest, confirmed *NON* allergen ingredients and you go with those ONLY for a week, sometimes longer. If symptoms are gone, you may have a food allergy!  If they are not gone, a food allergy could be a problem, but may not be the primary source of concern.

5) You say every 3rd to 4th day...is there a change in her routine, YOUR routine, or ANYONE'S routine in your home?  Does someone work a different shift some days of the week? Is there a change in the time that the dog gets fed? Etc., etc.

6) Loose stool overall...some dogs just have it. Usually it is related to dietary or nutritional needs but anything is possible.

I sure hope you get to the root of it!

Above all else, I can just feel how tired your body and heart are from this tough regimen of dealing with the constant mess, concern, and failed treatments for the diarrhea. Take a deep breathe and wrap your arms around yourself and remember how wonderful you are for rescuing this dog in the first place. You can do it! I am sending you lots of positive energy for peace, renewal, and a fresh perspective to help get to the root of the issue. If there is anything else I can do, please let me know!

Love and Hugs,
Jen and Balthie :)

Transporting & Traveling With Dogs / Dog car safety?
« on: April 13, 2008, 08:19:24 am »
I'm sorry I  keep asking so many questions and making so many posts...I'm just in love with Balthazar AND with BPO!

I would be grateful for feedback on how to ensure Balthazar's safety when traveling with us in the car.  Right now, he is great...there are no problems to correct or any disruptive behaviors. He is like an angel...once he is in the back seat, he will lay down.  If my husband is driving and I'm in the passenger seat, he likes to climb into my lap (yes, he is a Newf/Pyr mix!), and although it's absolutely adorable and heartwarming, I would like to make sure he is traveling safely.

This is really uncharted territory for us. Our other two dogs are tiny, and our Lexi who passed away was a medium sized sweetheart but she would simply go to sleep for a car ride.

What is safest for our giant dogs while in the car?

Thanks for any help!

Love,
Jen and Balthie

Book Club & Noteworthy Reads / DOG is my co-pilot! :)
« on: April 13, 2008, 08:04:04 am »
Okay, reading everyone's signatures and quotes and such all day today, it seems to me there are a lot of great quotes regarding dogs and animals at disposal of BPO members. I, myself, LOVE quotes of all sorts and have "collected" them since childhood.

What are your favorite quotes about dogs/animals? To get this thread party started, here are some of mine:

On dogs....

"Dog is my co-pilot!"
 -Motto of BARK magazine

"There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face."
-Ben Williams

On animal welfare/vegetarianism....

"Now I can look at you in peace. I don't eat you anymore."
-Franz Kafka

"You put a baby in a crib with an apple and a rabbit. If it eats the rabbit and plays with the apple I'll buy you a new car."
-Harvey Diamond

On the nature of animals:

"An animal's eyes have the power to speak a great language."
-Martin Buber

"Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened."
-Anatole France

Okay...YOUR TURN...GO! :)

Specific Website Information / Re: Im losing my mind!
« on: April 13, 2008, 07:05:53 am »
Hi, Kealoa!

The good news is, you're already leaps and bounds ahead of me...you HAVE your mind to lose!  Mine has been gone on vacation for awhile. I miss it sometimes. Sigh....not really. (giggle giggle)

I had the same problems you are having when I joined a couple of days ago!  My avatar pic was too big so my hubby resized it down.  I JUST tried posting pictures a minute ago of my other pets and they were too large, too, LOL.

I have been a part of other forums before, but they look dramatically different and are organized very differently than BPO as well.

Here's what I know:  the categories are listed on the left side of the page. You can choose a category by clicking on the link, and then when you click "post" (also on the left), it will go in that category.

To check what is getting new posts, I am doing something that is probably arse backwards, LOL, but it works for me...I click on the "Message Board Home" link at the top(ish) right of the page.

You are not alone. You are not alone!

Since you won't officially introduce yourself yet, I won't officially welcome you yet...but soon, my dear, I hope to be welcoming you warmly! :)  I really like it here. I'm just technologicall y challenged, that's all. :D

Love,
Jen and Balthazar

Awwww...poor Sierra!  But how lucky she is to have such a caring, dedicated mommy to love her! :)

I have never tried that food, BUT...a friend of mine who lives in Asheville, NC had a similar problem with one of her dogs.  She took her dog to a holistic vet who suggested the Natural Balance allergy formulas and now she swears by it.  I don't know if the root of the issue was, in fact, a food allergy or not for her dog.  I just remember that when she gave her the Natural Balance, the skin and coat condition improved greatly and there was a lot less scratching!  Hope this helps....

It sure was nice of the store to offer you plenty of samples. I will keep my fingers crossed for you and Sierra. Please let us know how it works out...I am sure there are other dog caregivers who will look forward to learning how this does!

Love,
Jen

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Re: The dyson animal rocks
« on: April 13, 2008, 05:43:28 am »
We have this Dyson and it ROCKS!

My in-law's gifted us with it for Christmas/Holidays a few years ago (um...is that a hint, MIL?) when we lived in a condo in Athens that was carpeted. In full agreement with all the other testimonials here, it made a HUGE difference in our carpet from the very first use.  Maybe *part* of it is psychological, as I watch every particle of dust, fur, and junk visibly swirling around inside that magnificent clear whatchamagig that captures the dirt.  But either way, the thing works!

We have since moved to a home that is all hardwood flooring, with the exception of one very shaggy carpet room and one limestone kitchen. We continue to use the Dyson animal vac and it really, really works. The attachments work beautifully on our sofas and UNDER furniture where those lovely tumbleweeds of fur love to reside.

Highly recommended!

Mixed Breed Discussion / Your Newf/Pyr mix?
« on: April 13, 2008, 05:28:34 am »
Hello all!

I'm up to asking more questions again! :)

I was wondering if anybody has a New/Pyr mix and would share photos of them?  I'm just excited to see them...Balthaz ar is so handsome and I'm wondering how others of the same mix turn out? :)  Thanks for posting pics if you have them!

Love,
Jen and Balthie

Well then, if I do end up getting a Big Shrimpy bed, maybe I'LL just steal it to sleep in and Balthazar and my hubby can sleep in our regular bed (since they BOTH snore)! LOL :D

I have looked at some memory foam beds online that are large enough to fit Balthie with me right next to him on it...and have had product reviews stating that the owners occasionally use the bed to sleep with the dog, OR to use as an extra bed for visiting human guests! LOL

Wolfhound Discussions & Pictures / Re: Sara gets a BOB
« on: April 13, 2008, 04:36:22 am »
(laughs at self and blushes)

Proof I am a pure newbie here. I read the subject line of this post and think...Bob is a new stuffed animal toy, or perhaps a puppy.  Then I think, "or maybe she got a haircut?"

LOL

BOB = Best Of Breed!  Got it...congratul ations, Sarah! :)

Thanks, ZooCrew!  For outdoors, I don't have any experience with them, but I've seen some really cool 'cot' style raised beds that are very nice looking and can keep the dog cool and comfortable with airflow below them, raised off the ground. I've seen a collapsible one for travel as well.  Maybe those could help you out as either a starting point for the bed you want to make, or even just work as they are?

So far I really do like the look of the Big Shrimpy nest bed, Dahlie!  Would I see "large" as the biggest size option on a website I'm looking on...would that be large enough for Balthazar when he gets older, do you think?

I also like the crib mat idea.....

Rottweiler Pictures / Re: An Exotic New Breed
« on: April 13, 2008, 04:12:15 am »
Oooohhhh...I had heard of the Venetian Rott before but never saw one!  I hear they are related to the equally exotic Levalor Rott and the even more unusual Valance Rott!

Thank you for capturing this exquisite rare creature on film!  National Geographic should surely be beating down your door for exclusive print rights!

:D :D :D

Thanks, Jenn! :) You are all welcome to visit anytime...ther e are no strangers; only friends we haven't met yet! :)

FYI....

Moi aussi, j'embrasse mon chien sur la bouche!  :-*

Thanks for the feedback so far, guys!

I checked out Big Shrimpy (funny name...hee hee hee) and they look lovely!  I also just caught the fact that the crib mattress is seen in your avatar, Cindy! I wasn't sure if crib mattresses would work for Balthie or not just because of the weight factor...it's great to hear they do!  I was concerned because I was figuring that these crib mats were really designed for human babies who way significantly less than our doggies will.  It sounds like they hold up well, though!

Any other ideas/input/feedback/suggestions?  I'm really interested!

I also notice that with Balthie, he loves laying on our cool, slick hardwood floors and especially the limestone kitchen floor!  He will choose the floor over the boring bed he currently has.  It made me wonder about those "cooling" beds that you fill with some water, too. Has anybody tried them...or are there other suggestions? Thanks again...this is wonderful! :)

They are so beautiful!  I love these pictures!  Do you ever read the magazine called "BARK" by chance?  You should submit some of those to the "smiling dogs" page because their smiles are just gorgeous and uplifting to look at even in photos! :)

I have to laugh at the glasses thing...this just happened to me!  Balthazar got mine off of my nightstand I think (or they fell) and chewed them to oblivion.  The great news?  They were under full warranty...so I get a brand new pair for free...no charge at all! :D  Maybe yours are warranty covered as well?

And as for the dirty coffee cup, I can relate to that one, too...my Balthie has become a big fan of...empty toilet paper rolls, LOL!

Thanks for sharing such fun photos...I love them! :)

Love,
Jen and Balthie

Very good and important points, Nicole! :)  I definitely don't lump all large scale farms into the factory farm "genre" nor all "small" farms into nice and warm and fuzzy to their animals.  You are so right about this...the size or stature of a farming situation does not secure the standards by which it runs.

That's why I make a point to know who and where my local food comes from whenever possible. It's not a formula for perfection of course, but it's a start I feel great about. By eliminating all meat from my diet, I don't participate in the support of poor animal conditions for food use at the large or small scale farming level. I choose not to contribute to the slaughter of animals and the perceived *likelihood* of mistreatment at any farm in this way.  My eggs and dairy come from lovely, reliable, animal enthusiasts. Some have a few personal pet "family" hens and share eggs when available, and others have a few family goats or cows who produce occasional, very limited quantities of *delicious* fresh, hormone free milk and cheeses.  True...these are not visited and regulated by government organizations. ..but part of the beauty of it is that they do not have to be when they raise companion-style farm animals and share food gifts with other friends and neighbors. I have a mad stash of gorgeous blueberries when in season and share those, along with fresh rosemary, apples, pomegranates, etc. It's a rather small community of very progressive, artsy fartsy, fun, forward thinking people where I live and we work together to create healthy foods for ourselves...an d we share well with others, lol. :) To give you an idea of the foodtopia I live in, a neighbor a block away takes a walk each evening and he often and leaves me radish tops and baby carrots in my mailbox to feed my house bunny, LOL!

While there are still a lot of flaws, concerns, and issues to be ironed out with all types of food sources and farming, I am really pleased with the choices I make and those people in our community make to improve food quality, environmental responsibility, and to work towards a greater goal.  It's not yet achieved, but it's a great goal and I love encouraging others to find their best ability level to contribute to the solution instead of the problem and just go for it! :)  A lot of people are starting to think more than ever about what we put into our planet, our bodies, and our children's bodies, and how we can do better. Bravo! :)
