Old English Mastiff Discussions / Limping -help!
« on: February 02, 2009, 04:27:02 pm »
Hello everyone! It has been awhile since I have posted.. but I need some advice. I am going a bit nuts here. Triton started favoring his right shoulder at 9 months old.. I waited a couple weeks thinking that it may be an injury and when it didn't get better went to the vet. He examined and thinks it is his right shoulder and gave me pain meds to give to see if it would heal on its own. Well, 1 pill to go and it is getting worse. Triton is now 10 months old. The vet is going to x-ray the hsoulder on the 17th when Triton goes i nto get neutered. Since the vet saw him he started doing this odd thing - when he is sitting and baring weight on his right paw this shoulder will wort of "give out" for a second then correct. I watched a video of it on slow motion and it almost seems that his shoulder is quickly rolling out and back in the joint. Anyone have experience with this? Any ideas ? The wait to the 17th is killing me.. I hope this isn't something serious. If he walks for any length of time the limp gets worse and worse. So have been taking it easy. Advice?? Please???

FAQs about puppies / Update on puppy saga...
« on: May 20, 2008, 02:09:00 pm »
Hello! I am pleased to report that Triton never showed symptoms of parvo and is still happy and healthy!! Best news is he is coming home this weekend FINALLY and he will be 9 and 1/2 weeks old. According to the vet there is no way Triton was not exposed to parvo so he is either immune or the early treatment of parvaid did the trick. So he has not received any vaccinations under those circumstances and I was told to wait a couple weeks to start them because he may have a low immune system due to exposure..? I'm just happy he is healthy and I'm ready to meet the little guy -- the picture in my avatar is him at 8 weeks (and a little wet from the sprinkler). :)

I have been looking forward to meeting my boy Saturday, and I just got the following email from the breeder: Well I have some horrible news.  Two of our puppies have Parvo, I took the boy to the vet this morning and when I got home the little girl was throwing up to.  The fawn boy was first and now the small brindle girl.  They must have got it last Saturday when we took them for their temperament evaluation.  We were so careful to spray everything down, I just guess you can't be for sure on this type of thing.  I have the 2 on IV fluids and antibiotics and am starting all of them on some holistic stuff called Parvaid.  I'll attach a link.

So far your boy does not have it, but I am guessing he will.  If we can start him on the Parvaid before he shows symptoms I think we are way ahead of the game.
So now that obviously means no puppies are leaving until everyone has a clean bill of health.  Even then you may not want him after having to wait a few weeks.  It is up to you, just wanted to let you know what I do and my concern is of course on the puppies.
I'll email you when I know more.

What do I do?! If he comes down with parvo I am afraid if I take him home after he recovers he will have health issues his whole life -- I can't afford that! Should I wait for another litter?? This is SO HARD.. please please any advice would be appreciated. This is heart breaking.   :'(

So I posted on the general board about my new little man who will be coming home 8 weeks old on Saturday.. I have a six year old mastiff/mix that I got as a puppy and never used a crate with her. Of course she dug holes in the carpet and ate some walls.. not a grand idea. Anyways, I'm not sure I like the idea of a crate and I planned on just keeping him in an X-Pen when we were away.. however, he has shown himself to be insecure in new environments so I'm sure he will be scared when he first comes home. I know the breeder has been using a crate with him to transport/etc.. basically my question is would it be harmful to NOT use a crate with him and just use the x-pen? Think with him being more insecure he needs a crate to feel safe? I will be picking him up and going on a two and a half hour car ride home with him and was planning on just holding him but may borrow a crate from someone for the ride at least. Any thoughts?  ???

I need some advice! I am getting an english mastiff puppy in a week and just got word from the breeder that he is very insecure in new environments. He is great with new people, but when you get him out of his home environment he hides in a corner for about 10 minutes before slowly venturing out to check things out. I want to be able to take this puppy with me everywhere as I want to use him for therapy work.. being great with people but not new environments makes me nervous.. has anyone had experience with this?? Will he snap out of it with enough work or am I doomed to have a 200# boy who will hide in the corner when we go out? ? Any advice is appreciated.
Sorry!! Forgot to mention, he is still with the breeder and litter mates, I am not bringing him home until he is 8 weeks.. he is about 4 hours away so I have not met him, this is just input I am getting from the breeder.
