Great Pyrenees Pictures / Re: Pics of pyrenees/artic wolf hybrid
« on: September 05, 2008, 07:21:22 pm »
I did a little research and found out the ending of this dog/wolf hybrid story may not turn out so good. Seems the older they get the more wolf comes out although i could find no references of a mix of this type. He acts like a normal friendly Pyr so far. He has some of the Pyr herd instinct but has already mauled a mini-goat and killed some chickens.  What i have is a herd dog that herds them up and then tries to eat them. Loves to chase armadillos! He does the Pyr "big paw swipe" sometimes but not so much as he gets older. He doesn't wander away from home like a Pyr. The tail hangs down a lot of the time instead of curling up over the back. He has a feriocious digging instinct which i understand is a wolf trait. The back yard has craters everywhere. He gets bored easily and chews up anything not tied down. Plays well with the other dogs except the play fights with the pit bull almost get out of hand sometimes. Another thing i have noticed that i didn't on the other Pyrs is the dog laying on his back and acting submissive whenever i come around like i am the alpha male. He has a mouthful of long sharp teeth and the pit bull after playing looks like it has been through a shredder sometimes. In other words, wolf teeth not Pyr teeth. I have to keep him regardless of how he turns out because i found out that i pretty much couldn't give him away because of what he is and dog pounds won't take wolf mixes. In other words if he turns out bad he will have to be destroyed. I don't even want to think about that.

Thanks, i might look into getting him some good food but this is a yard dog with a job to do, bark and look intimidating. If it's too expensive he'll stay on kibbles and chunks. He's useless as a herd dog, too much prey instinct apparently. We had some chickens and "mini-goats" and he would actually herd them up like a Pyr and then grab them like a Wolf. Mauled one of the goats up pretty bad but didn't kill it. He killed several chickens too but really hasn't bothered the smaller dog. There may be trouble ahead though because his teeth look longer and sharper than normal dog teeth. We have had 2 other pyrs before him so luckily i have something to compare him too. One died from eating a poisonous Cottonmouth snake!!??(it's true) and the other we found dead in the woods, apparently killed by wild hogs. The pit bull got gored by a wild boar right outside the yard one night and got a nasty tusk wound so we figured the 8 mo old pyr encountered some in the woods and got killed by them.

Thanks for the replies. I'm in pretty much uncharted territory as to what this dog will be. All i know is both Pyrs and Artic Wolves are huge animals. As to what he was eating up until a couple months ago, cheeseburgers, spaghetti, potato logs, chicken breasts and philly steak sandwiches. That is until my stepdaughter got fired from her job at a deli. She worked at night and was bringing back the leftovers for the dog at closing time(not the reason she got fired). Now it's back to Kibbles and Chunks and Gravy Train. He seem to be starting to fill back out in the last couple weeks. Don't know if it's a coincidence or not but he started losing weight about the time it got very hot here.

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Pyr grew 2 pounds in 2 months!!??
« on: September 03, 2008, 07:09:02 pm »
Weighed 52 pounds @ 4 months old, 84 pounds @ almost 7 months. Thought i was going to have a giant and then he stopped gaining weight and got skinny. Carried to vet and got more shots and wormed but vet found nothing wrong. Now he's 8 1/2 mo and only 86 pounds. What happened? I might add he's an artic wolf/pyrenees hybrid and it looks like he grew taller and longer in the last 2 months but gained basically no weight. He seems to have started filling out and growing again but i have no clue why. He is taking on a more long slender artic wolf shape than the stocky great pyrenees shape. Since he's not a purebred great pyr can we just throw the pyr growth charts out the window? This seems to be a fairly uncommon mix and i can find no references anywhere. I can't find out where the dogs litter mates are to check them either.

Romeo was a free "Great Pyrenees" 5 week old pup. He turned out to be a hybrid and we didn't know about it until he started to look a bit peculiar. He's 8 1/2 months old now. Here's some pics in case anyone is curious about what this combination looks like. If you look at him a certain way he looks like a Pyr and other ways as you can see, he looks like a wolf.

Sounds like your neigbor has a meth lab in his basement or something. No kidding, that's what that behavior sounds like. There's a lot of crazy people out there.

Hey guys, thanks for all the replies. I couldn't find much info on this type of dog. We don't have many animals, couple horses, few goats, 3 pigs and some chickens. Right now the chickens seem to be the easy targets and he mauled a goat pretty bad but that may just be a pup playing. I figure if he weighs 90 at 6 months he should put on another 40-50 pounds when fully grown. That's going to be around a 150 pounder :o. Right now he just runs in the house and scoops up whatever food is on the table by just sticking his head up there. Maybe i can pass him off as a short-haired great pyrenees. I don't have any neigbors real close and there is the electic invisible fence which keeps the dogs in the yard. I fear sooner or later a conflict with the ol ladys Pit Bull is inevitable though. Hope he turns out better than what some of you guys predict.

Thanks for the replies. He's not caused many problems yet except for chewing up things and chasing smaller animals. Most of the time he acts like a big ol goofy dog...except for killing and eating smaller animals!!!! :( We have about got him broken from that. He plays real well with the female Pit Bull but then again he's not a grown dog so there may possibly be trouble ahead there. The last male weighed 85 pounds at 7 months so this one is way ahead on growth. I can't imagine what kind of place the idea of  this dog breeding experiment was born in. I have noticed that as he gets older the Great Pyrenees traits like the "big paw swipe" and the herd instinct are going away.  He really is a beautiful dog, solid white and muscular with long legs and giant feet but it's one of those dogs you look at and go "What kind of dog is that?". He looks like a Great Pyrenees but not like he should.

Ah, i should have know a free dog was too good to be true. We were out of town and relatives gave us a 5 week old great pyr pup someone had gave them. He was solid white and i didn't think much about it having blue eyes. We needed a herd dog for the animals since the last 2 great pyrs died. As the little dog grew older his hair got shorter instead of longer. His nose grew a bit longer than i thought it should. The body also didn't look right, taller and longer with slits for eyes almost. The last straw was when he grew a very long bushy tail that hung to the ground. Now wait a minute, that ain't right! Told the ol lady go back and check this things pedigree. Turns out he is an Artic Wolf/Great Pyrenees hybrid which her relatives "conviently" forgot to mention. He now is 6 months old and weighs 90 pounds which places him squarely in the giant mongrel category. He has great pyr traits but also predatory wolf traits. I now have a "herd dog" that rounds the animals up and tries to eat them. So far he's only got 2 chickens and a goat and it's a constant fight to keep him from chasing the smaller animals. Any input or suggestions on why some bonehead would try to breed these two completley different types of animals together? Also, how big is thing going to get?
