Now that Tess (was named Lia) is a full service dog and comes with me everywhere, 24/7, I'm concerned about the amount of road salt she gets from walking in messy Vt winter conditions.  Her rear double dews stick out perpendicular.  Can anyone recommend dog boots that work for a pyr?

Thanks.....

I first want to say how very sorry I am for your huge losses Truckerdave and Samsmom.  How awful for you, and then have the heartless, arrogant replies from pyrlove.

This is the first time in a very long time I've checked back to read the posts.  This thread was my first click back on the site.  I'm not sure if any of you remember but a year ago I was bashed in a similar way when I found this site, reached out and asked for help.  I too was in a very heartbroken state when the bashing replies came at me.  The only one who deserves your heartless attacks is you, pyrlove.

Tess has one eye that looks as it has conjunctivitis and the other does not.  I finally took her to an eye specialist who said that it's a benign abnormality - one eye has a pigmented third eyelid and the other that looks red and raw is not pigmented.  Everyone is always saying "What's wrong with your dog's eye"???  I was really worried until it was checked out.....

Big Dogs with Jobs / Re: Big Dog Service Dogs

Hi All,

It's been quite a while since I stopped by and I just found this thread so I felt I should reply.  In August I rescued my two year old pyr mix Tess (was Lia).  I'm training her to be my multitasking SD including hearing assistant.  She's doing a great job.  Tess is not a natural for sound alerting as a border collie mix could be yet she is finally getting the one-way and just starting on the two-way sound alerts.  It's been a real challenge training a two year old rather than starting with a young pup but we are getting there.

Tess is amazing in public access and I find that the store owners and staff are more of a problem than the customers.  The staff usually act like because it's their store they can bend go up to the dog no matter what.  I'm quite hard of hearing so usually I don't notice it until it's already happening.  I have found that most other people are more respectful.  I was so impressed with several kids and their parents last week when I brought Tess in her SDit vest with me to pick up my granddaughter.  Tess loves kids and I wanted her to have more practice sitting calmly while they would pet her.  Every single kid asked me if they could pet her before approaching!  They were so good about listening to me when I explained that they could pet her as long as she stayed calm and seated but if she got up they were to turn away and ignore her.  It was a success and a great training experience for all involved.

Good luck with training.....

Thanks, Holly.  Lia is not wagging her tail when scratched there yet.  She began bleeding August 29 or 30.  I'm playing it safe as long as I need to.  So far she's so easy that it's not too big of a deal......

Thanks for all of your replies.  It finally makes sense now.  And sweet, innocent Lia is not acting so innocent tonight!  She is so full of it!!!  She even tried to mount my 16 year old cat Podie - not appreciated at all.  And a big, stuffed fleece ball that she totally ignored until tonight - she just disemboweled it in two minutes flat....too funny..

Yup - she's full of it all right.

Thanks again

-Yet another stupid question from me, if she may be fertile after she stops bleeding, is it ovulation that's the end of the heat cycle or the actual bleeding.

Thank you, this is very new to me and I won't let her get pregnant so I'm trying to figure it out.  I've read different things so it gets confusing....

Thanks ZooCrew....   great picture...

Hi Karen,

I too have a dog in heat now.  She is a rescue who had a bad respiratory infection when I got her so her spay had to wait.  Lia has been bleeding for ten days now and yesterday she began to try mounting me every time I would cuddle with her or praise her for anything.  Today  a guy came to give me an estimate on a repair on my house and Lia would not leave him alone - how embarrassing!!!  I'm assuming she must be close to ovulation but I'm not going to let her off the lead for at least another month.  After she is through her heat, then I will wait until her hormones have time to settle before she is spayed.

My question to those who know is how do I know when her hormones have settled enough to have her spayed?

Good luck, Karen.  We will laugh about this some day (actually I'm laughing about it now but I hope the carpenter never sees me again!!!)....... carol

Thanks, Lisa.  You sure have quite a crew there with you!   That's lots of white fluff!!!!  Do you have it spun into yarn?

I tried taking pictures of Lia's double dews today but they did not come out.

Thanks for all of the replies.  It helps to know that the dews are very sensitive for most pyrs....

I meant Lia was in season...  But yes, I don't leave her in the car unless it's cloudy and not hot at all...  I have a crate but I'm not rushing that - we are in the feed in the crate stage now.  She loves being in the car - it's just that she now has discovered she can bark all she wants when she's in there and I've gone in someplace for a few minutes.....

What's funny is that she never made a peep in the car until her barking at home stopped - even though the barking at home was guardian type with growling.....

Hi Holly,

Lia is in heat now and even if she was not, I don't know if she will make it as a hearing ear dog.  If she does not, then that's okay - she will stay with me as my only dog.  Even if she does make it though, she needs to know not to bark if/when waiting for me.

I'm not even starting to work with her on service dog related tasks until after she's feeling better from being spayed in two months.  For now we are just staying away from boys and learning basics like sit, down and stay..... and nipping the few unacceptable behaviors in the bud.

I'm not rushing this at all.  We have both been through traumas and are taking it slow.  I will only begin with specialized training once she's feeling great and also once I figure out her learning style well enough so I know how and she knows why - very important with her being a Pyr mix.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Barking in the car - how to stop it???
« on: September 08, 2008, 05:16:18 pm »
Miraculously we have stopped 99% of Lia's Pyr barking in the house.  So now she has decided that barking non-stop in the car while I've gone in a store or other errand is just fine.  I'm not scolding her when I come back because she's quiet with the happiest smirk on her face then.

Anyone have luck changing that behavior?

I am so in love with this girl.  Every evening when my bedroom begins to get dark she goes in to lie on her bed and chew her rawhide so tenderly....

So endearing..... ...

Can anyone post a picture of a close-up double dew?  I'm just wondering if all pyr double dews stick straight out like Lia's.

Thanks for your replies.  I thought about a dremmel but Lia is so afraid of motor noises like that.  I think I will just keep touching them every day so she learns that I won't hurt her.

Am I the only one who could not get back on the BPO site until now?  I'm so glad to be back....

I think you are right, Juju.  On each double dew set of hers, one feels articulated like a pyr and the other sticks straight out at a 90 degree angle to her leg.  Is that usual in a pyr?
