She is a cutie-pie! They look so happy together!

You are inspiring me to work on training Mayhem's 'little' brother (looks just like her but bigger!) so we can adopt him! Like Annabelle, he needs a lot of time and effort, but he'd be so worth it.

Thanks for the advice, and the great line ('room for one more!'). Love it.
We decided to have some more weekend visits and try to instill some manners in the youngster, with the goal of having him become a new roommate. :)

Newfoundland Discussions / Advice on adopting Newf #2?

Hi!
I can only assume you all are the most appropriate crowd to poll on such a matter... What do you think about adopting a 1 year-old male to join our 2 year-old female? Here are some particulars, followed by some photos so you can see them in action. (If the camera battery hadn't been dead, I would have taken a shot of them sleeping on each other a few hours ago. Adorable!)

He is actually Mayhem's little brother, and one solid, strong, sweetie-pie dog, but *entirely* untrained, as in, really no clue about leashes, sitting, laying down, house training, you name it! We are in VT this weekend where we have space and grass and no cars. But he'd be a wild child where we live during the week (urban... think sidewalks and lots of dogs, kids, cars, trucks, sirens, etc.). Oh, and he's intact, too! We could maybe take him for weekends up here, until he could handle at least the leash concept...

But he and Mayhem seem to have a blast together. And he's happily snoozing in a big crate right now.

Any thoughts?

In the photos, Mayhem is running, and George is more sort of lumbering. :)

Oh, my!
He is adorable, and I concur that he is going to be enormous! He's not looking at all chubby - all that pounds must be muscle and fur!

Oh my gosh! So adorable! This is not helping me keep my resolve to not call the breeder to get on the list for another!!!

I love that you live on a 'loch', by the way!

Oh, and Mayhem has the paper-destruction thing down, too! I let her shred junk mail. We leave paper out all the time and she doesn't rip it up unless you give it to her.

Really the worst thing she's done as far as destruction goes is the tubing in the automatic watering system on our deck... we weren't exactly out supervising her (in the snow), so it's really our fault. Live and learn!

Hi! She is an *adorable* pup! Looks fresh from a bath, too-- (that only lasts like 5 min., right?) :)

I was always tempted to call my first Newf SuzyQ as a nickname but have a relative named Susan so had to keep reminding myself not to. (She had plenty of other nicknames, especially Miss America!)

Love it!!!!
I keep telling my hubby that Newfies really ought to come in pairs. My pup is in need of a nap buddy. :)

And so true that Newfies are characters!

My sympathies... been there with our first Newf. She had her own double-size pill organizer and the thickest file at the vet's office. Actually, she had a pretty big file at the vet hospital, too (including cruciate ligament TPLO surgery - more of my sympathies for your poor Sophie!).

But they are stoic creatures, aren't they? So good-natured, even when most humans in the same condition would be pretty snippy.

Mayhem the pup is so far pretty healthy (knock on wood), except that dog food (Precise brand - supposed to be relatively good quality, no?) gives her the runny p00s. She gets rice, chicken, veggies, cottage cheese, etc. Seems to work, and she loves it!!

I don't see a link, either, but I can tell you that our silly pup Mayhem is *loving* her agility class. Amazing what she'll do for the *tiniest* piece of roast beef!!  ("You want me to go through this little tunnel I barely fit in? You bet! How many times?") LOL!! She seems to be enjoying herself.

I agree with the previous posters - more training would likely help, and consider the prong collar. It's not the solution for every dog, but for some big, stubborn pooches, it's the only way to go. Our prior regulation-size (and stubborn!!) Newf really needed the prong (our trainer called it 'power steering'), but thanks to a different personality and clicker training, our current mini-Newfie needs nothing more than a flat collar and a couple of goldfish crackers to be heeling like a champ. :) Good luck!

Our previous Newfie (140 lb female) had TPLO surgery at about 2 years of age for a mostly-torn cruciate. Maybe things have changed in the last 10 years, but it was a pretty grueling and lengthy surgery/rehab. The other leg had a smaller tear, so we basically had to repair one of them. We maybe could have subsequently done the leg with the smaller tear, but just couldn't face it. She seemed to manage pretty well except for arthritis from a young age -- glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate highly recommended. Good luck!

Love all the Newfie action pix!!
I just replied to the other thread that we recently started pre-agility classes. Any pix of Annabelle doing the weave poles?? That's the part I can't imagine Mayhem doing... the jumps should be no problem because she is very bouncy :)

[Annabelle] is now starting agility and starting her first trials (wish us luck).

Annabelle is incredibly cute!!! We are taking pre-agility courses so hope to follow in your foot(paw?)steps at some point!! I saw a picture online years ago of a Newfie doing weave poles and just cracked up. Our previous Newfie was just *never* going to do something like that, but Mayhem is bouncy and just needs something interesting to do!
Mayhem arrived with zero manners but is just such a sweet dog that training has been a breeze. (It's me that needs to learn... she's a natural!)

Some family issues prevented the originally-intended owner from taking her, so little Mayhem was still at the breeder's at 8 months of age. We had a short list of names, but she decided for us by tackling me to introduce herself. :) It was love at first 60-lbs-of Newfie tackle!!
