My son saved Kuma's life last night!!
« on: May 31, 2006, 06:45:25 am »
We have an above ground pool that has never held any interest for Kuma (Who is now 5 months! I can’t believe it!) until , of course, the kids started using it several weeks ago.  She LOVES playing in it but CAN’T get out herself and my husband and I knew this could be a tragedy so we have been looking around for ladders with wider steps and more of an incline….”just in case”  I have not been to terribly concerned about it since we had it fenced because of our 3 year old son.  In addition, when the kids are not in there she does not pay any attention.

Last night it was HOT, HUMID and muggy!  My son was out riding around the yard on his little tractor and I was sweeping.  Kuma kept running around and playing but she was starting to get hot and I noticed she was looking for shade to lay around…several minutes went by (And I didn’t notice her) and I heard my son yell something to me….but to be honest it went in one ear and out the other!  ;)
Then he ran up and said “Mommy! Naughty Kuma is in the pool!!”

She had BROKE THROUGH a rail in the fence and jumped in the pool and was swimming around!!  :o  I don't know how long she had been there but by the time I ran down there she looked as if she was tiring out and swimming around trying to find a place to crawl up!  It was SO scary!!  (And now a new worry in regard to keeping her out of the pool!)  I knew she loved water (Loves going to the lake!) but never dreamed she would jump in without anyone being there!

We were calling my son a Kuma’s Hero last night!  :)

Hi,

Wow what a bright boy to get mom. I just did a quick search on google (dog pool ramps)and this came up, it seems reasonably  priced.

It would be wise to get a kiddie pool for her so she can cool off, summer is hard on newfoundlands, and they can overheat easily, i would bet the heat was stressing her out.
a kiddie pool filled with fresh water every morning will help keep the heat off her, make sure she has shade to.
good for your son, he truly is a hero, that would be a horrible way to die!

She was not out long enough to overheat…(I have to watch that down South here! LOL) and actually has two kiddie pools for that reason! She just would rather the “grown up” pool!  ;D
She really is a typical Newf….LOVES to swim…get her feet paddling!

BTW: My husband told a friend on the phone last night that "our son had to rescue our WATER RESCUE dog!"  :D

Hi Beth,

The weight limit says 100 pounds on the big dog version of that ramp. I'm sure Kuma is probably at the max weight already, but you can probably beef it up by adding some strapping (PVC tubes) to the bottom of the ramp. You can get PVC cheap at the Home Depot. Here is the whole Google link if you want to browse some more.

Oh man! So glad Kuma was safe and that your son told you about her! It could have been a very bad situation. But the Lord was watching over Kuma, that's for sure!

Well than, i bet she knew what she wanted and just busted thru to go for the big swim! but, keep in mind, 80-90 degrees is hard on them, in a short time when running around they can overheat. just a beware that many are not aware of. ;)

YAY!  Your son is a hero in my book!  Some kids wouldn't think it was a problem, and the dog could have drowned!
What a great learning experience for kids!
