Will feeding raw help?
« on: June 02, 2006, 01:58:19 am »
I have searched for a commercial brand dog food for our dogs for almost a year.  We have two dogs, aged 6 and 10 months, and nothing has seemed right for both of them.  We've tried Wellness, Natural Balance Duck & Sweet Potato, Merrick, Canidae, and a local brand called Lotus which was touted by those who get commission for selling it as "the new Wellness since they changed their formula."  On Canidae my Chesapeake lost fur.  On Wellness they both had horrible diahrrea (internal parasites ruled out).  On Lotus the Chesapeake developed raw, flaky patches on the inside of her ears, which also happened to a lab friend of ours.  Natural Balance worked fine for a while until the Chesapeake stopped eating it and the pit bull started itching uncontrollably (flea meds in place).  So today was our first day of feeding raw, and I was wondering if this will really help?  To those who feed raw, I spent about $20 for two weeks' worth of food.  Does this sound right?  If not, does anyone in the Southern California area feed raw and know of a good wholesale meat distributor we should check out?  Thanks for any opinions.

I feed both my dogs raw and I wouldnt feed any other way... I do need to know how and what you are feeding....

Some good links are as follows

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rawfeeding/
http://www.rawfeddogs.net/
http://www.rawlearning.com/
http://www.rawdogranch.com/index.html

I do not use veggies...just meat bones organs and tripe... If you dog has runny stools add more bone to the meal...  A great food to start out with is turkey necks or pork necks...they both have good meat to bone ratio.  Make sure you only start out on one protein source until the dog digests and has appropiate stools....

In regards to cost... I dont know what you are purchasing

Good luck

Welcome to the group, you will find a wealth of information here or at least links to other great resources.  My name is Cindy and I am guardian to The Brindle Pack, we live in Apple Valley.  Where in southern California are you?

Currently I am feeding my pack Eagle Pack Holistic (with a little EVO for Tyra) and they are doing very well on it; however, I have thought about raw many times.  When doing my research I became a member of many of the same groups posted above but one that may help you a great deal is BARF Suppliers in California.  Here is the link:

Again, welcome to the group.

Why do you not feed veges?  I hate the hassle of feeding veges and Badger isn't keen on them anyway.
Raw food is the only way to go, in my opinion!

Dogs dont digest veggies unless they are made into a mush...  How many wolves do you see chomping on carrots LOL .... Why do they need vegeables... Even when wolves make a kill they rip out and discard the stomach contents which would be all the vegitation

I grind the veges into mush.  David said that it is good for the fiber.  I would rather not hassle with it if it isnt beneficial.  I'll go do some more research.  Thanks for the information, I am always wanting to learn about this diet!
