Malamute Ears
« on: July 25, 2006, 05:02:01 am »

Hi Guys, I am from Scotland and have one seven month old Siberian Husky named Meeka and one male Alaskan Malamute named Kaiko who is 9 weeks. I would like to ask a question if I may. One of the Malamute's ears just popped up around a week ago but the other is still floppy. Is this normal or could it be that the endless playfights the two have have damaged the younger one's ear.

Thanks in advance,

Craig

I think what your dog is going through is absolutely normal. You will most likely see the other one pop up in the next few days.
Some dogs keep a floppy ear through adulthood but it's not too common.

Here are some pictures of my girl that you might appreciate... they were all taken within one week!!!

Zoey is an Alaskan Malamute and her ears were both up when we got her at 5 weeks old. I agree, I think the other one should pop up here soon.

Hello and welcome.  I'd love to see pix of your two.

I agree with the others.  It's totally normal for one ear to pop up, then the other shortly after.  Keiko, my husky/shep mix had one ear up and one ear down for about a week before they both stayed up.  I actually hoped I would have one of each b/c I thought one up and one down would be so cute, but the ears didn't see it that way.........lo l.

When we got Cinder (Belgian Malinois) she was 16 weeks old and she had one ear that had flopped back down after they had both stood up.  It stayed down for quite awhile and now both ears are erect.

I have 2 mals one, Tonka, 17 mos, her ears have been up since I got her at 5 1/2 weeks old and only went floppy when she was teething and Nala, she will be 1 tomrrow, she is the typical radar one up and one down, every now and again they will both stand up, but not for long. I do know of one mal whose ears just started standing up and he is over 1 yr old.
