Kibble to raw transition....
« on: August 23, 2006, 10:50:07 am »
My little marcus at 35 poounds did not appear to have the acid for it just as yet. He barfed up a few bones(chicken neck). But I am not detered completely. Have read alot about the raw diet and seen much proof as to how well the dogs do on it. The neck bones are very rubbery and will be digested just fine once he has the fortitude.

Funny he does so well with nuckle beef bones. So I will do some more searches here on the site as to how to get his acids up. Although any pointers in the right direction wouold be great. I have found the raw forums to be overwelming in their numbers and would love a heads up @ss to what ones you here at BPO have had success with.

I think it is normal for some dogs to throw up their first few raw meals. Nigel did, and then, he ate what he threw up. I know it sounds gross, but it's easier for them to digest the second time around. :P

I just kept giving him chicken for every meal and within a day or two he was digesting everything fine. :)

I have a great book on raw feeding, which I definitely recommend. It simplifies everything. It is called: Raw Dog Food, Make it Easy and Fun for your Dog! by Carina Beth MacDonald. I found it to be a great resource and you don't have to keep hunting around on the internet for more information if you just get the book. ;D

Nola has been thriving on prey model raw for several months now.  At first, he yerped every once in a while after his meals.  Also, he will yerp up some undigested bone but I have found that is normal.  Just take it slow and he will get the hang of it.  Slowly introduce new meats such as pork, beef and rabbit so as to not shock his system. Same advice with organ meat - slowly.  Too much organ meat and you will get an explosive butt.  Remember, the larger the pieces you feed, the better.  It is really cool to watch him chomp on 1/2 a turkey.

I read Lonsdale's book Work Wonders: Feed Your Dog Raw Meaty Bones (Paperback)and that was very informative.

Yes, the Yahoo group is overwhelming but you can gleen a great deal of information.

I don't have any info on the Giardia.

Good luck!

Jaz had giardia, and they gave her flagyl. They told me to give her only small food and the pill...once a day... the more that you feed the more booty blowout they will have. By only feeding small to get the pill in her system it work wonders.

Well I would definitely follow your vet's advice, but something you can do to support your dog through this difficult time is to give him some natural yogurt. Go to your local health food store and buy plain yogurt that says it has "live cultures" in it. And just give it with meals, several spoonfulls. This is great for any problems a dog is having with the digestive system. Also I would recommend giving him filtered or bottled water (instead of tap water). The chlorine in regular tap water kills the beneficial "friendly" bacteria that is normally in a dog's digestive system, and this will make it more difficult for him to overcome intestinal bugs like giardia.

So that's my advice: clean pure water and natural yogurt as a supplement. :) It's not a "cure" but it will definitely help support his system while he is trying to heal.
Good luck!

If your dog has soft stools add more bone...   sometimes chicken has too much meat and not enough bone.... remember they make them fat LOL  I would take the breast meat off at first and feed the rest of the chicken to the dog.

I dont feed chicken necks because they are just too small but turkey necks i do use along with so many other meats LOL

hold off on liver because it is VERY rich and will give cannon but and introduce it gradually
