need advice
« on: September 17, 2006, 05:46:42 am »
Hey guys! Long time no hear... I am still getting settled into the new house and all - I had an issue today. Felony (who now weighs 110lbs) snapped at a little girl, now I have been good about socializing her all her life (her training is very good, she normally listens to me) and people come in and out of my house... the only person I have ever had an issue with was my brother-in-law, for some reason Felony just doesn't like him. But he is/was the only one. Today my daughter's friend came over and she has been over here before, and felony snapped at her and chased after her barking, luckily the little girl got over the gate before Felony got there.
I can't risk having her doing this to kids... any advice on what my next step is?

This is so difficult. I don't have young kids around, so I don't have this challenge. But, if I did, I would call a professional -- perhaps a behavior specialist who will provide one-on-one consultation. Whatever it takes!

Wow, I am sorry you have to deal with this issue! I agree with Moonlit, this is the time for professional advice, and I'd go with a behaviorist. Aggression towards children is not something to take lightly, of course! :-[

In the meantime I would keep Felony away from any situation where this kind of thing might happen again (which I imagine you are already doing), and make sure she is getting plenty of exercise. I'm not sure how often you walk her, but she might be a little thrown off balance by the move and getting settled in, and just have some pent-up energy. A good long walk every day will help drain away any frustration that she might have. I think exercise is always a great place to start with dogs who start showing signs of bad behavior. My crew always gets unruly when they haven't had enough exercise.

Best of luck, I really hope this is something that can be worked through. :)

Glad to see you back, although not for this reason...

As far as what to do, that depends a lot on the circumstances. ..what exactly hapenned...  Certainly, Felony cannot be trusted around strange children any more, and probably not adults either.

Hope everything works out.
