Any home remedies to settle a dogs stomach?
« on: September 21, 2006, 07:12:03 am »
Hubby fed Teddy a chocolate cookie and he has been having diarrhea and vomitting since last night.

Anyone know of something to help settle his stomach?  Preferrably something I might already have at home or can pick up after work?

I use canned pumpkin, not the pie filler, but the real pumpkin. If we are dealing with an especially drawn out runny bum I will give a pepto dosage too. Hope you feel better soon Teddy, and I hope for your Mom's sake that everything firms up the way it's suppose to real soon.

How much pumpkin do you give?  A cup or as much as he will eat?

How long does it take to work?

I just keep giving it (pumpkin) until the problem goes away. I don't think that there is any amount that is too much. I'll usually just give Cabeza a few tablespoons with each meal until he's better.

You can also give dogs Pepto. Its totally safe.

But, with that kind of reaction to chocolate, you might want to take him to the vet...just to be sure.

IF you happen to have it on hand, peppermint essential oil, 2 drops on his tongue should settle his tummy.  As for the runs, I think they will pretty much last til all of the toxin (cookie) is out of his system.  If you have some gingersnaps around the house, they would help too.  Settling his tummy probably won't have an immediate response from the business end.

Pepto and pumkin were my heros last night!

Gave him both when I got home from work then put him outside until after supper.  He was fine after supper until about 2am.  Gave him more pepto and more pumpkin but we were out another 4 times until it started to help him early this morning.

The vomitting has mostly stopped (he ate some kibble this morning and it came back up).  The pumpin has been staying down and he loves it!  LOL!

How much pepto do you give?  Bo weighs 115lbs...I thought I'd try to use that to settle her stomach/diarrhea while we're going through the food change.  Also, how much slippery elm works?  Pumpkin didn't do a damn thing for her, unfortunately!!

Is one better than the other?  I don't have a preference, just curious.  I hope her tummy gets better soon, too.  It's been over a month wtih WET WATERY poop and we're at our wits end to figure out what it is.  I think it's IBD, not pancreatitis like the vet thinks (lab results are inconclusive, pancreatitis test negative).

Six months of Buster's colitis and I finally found the "diahrrea" diet...cook turkey legs in a pot of water for 2 hrs and then add sweet potato and celery; cook for one more hr.  It was miraculous!  The "rice and chicken" the vet and many others never worked...  Great book: "The Nature of Animal Healing" by Martin Goldstein.

Here's Busterful now... ;)
