We're looking to adopt 2 dogs (one LGD and a deaf Dane)
« on: October 04, 2006, 10:37:25 am »
Hey everyone, it's been a while since I posted.
But I've been stopping in to read.

Mozart is doing wonderfully and so much so that we'd really like to adopt another deaf Dane. If anyone happens to come across one needing a loving forever home, hubby and I are here. We would want a male.

Secondly, we are now ready and in need of a LGD. We have a small herd of goats and have more coming soon.
I've researched GP's and AS's and Caucasians (my favorite so far) There's a mam*** (can't remember the name or spelling) we need to check into.
If anyone happens to have web sites, book and other info we can check out and research on LGD's please lead me in the right direction.
This will be our first. Sure can use all the knowledge, advice and help we can get to make this as successful as possible. Many thanks.

It's very awesome to see a post that says someone is ready for a new dog (or two!)!!! Ususally the posts are about dogs who need homes! It shouldn't take long at all for you to find some pooches in need. :) I will definitely keep my eyes and ears open for you. If I were still in TN I could get you a Great pyrenees in the next hour. There is always at least one at the local shelter in Nashville, usually several.

Too bad I can't let you borrow Mokey (my Pyr mix) for a while to look after your goats!! ;) I know she would love that!! :D

Well I guess that means me...LOL

Here is a link...
http://www.geocities.com/tanimara_2000/Livestock_Guardians_Intro.html

It is a very indepth article on livestock guardians in general.  It's a research article by Robin Riggs.  I dont agree with all she says but most of it is right on.  The main thing to remember is that she imburses the old theory that LGDs should not be socialized.  She's wrong!

When I first got into Pyrs the theory backed by the powers that be was that you took an 8 week old pup, put them in with whatever they were going to guard and leave them there.  They were not to be petted or socialized because (as the theory went) they would not bond with the animals they were to protect and would roam.

It did not take me long to figure out that it was a stupid theory.  This is one of my soap boxes when it comes to Pyrs.  But since I was just one of the "little guys" in the business I did not think I could really question the "experts".  After seeing some pups ruined by a lack of socialization, then trying it my way (that is to definitely socialize your LGDs) and seeing it work, then I did not hesitate to question the "autorities" and ticked half of them off.  But when you are 60 years old, it doesn't rally matter that much...LOL

Now many of the livestock guardians folks agree with me.  Some dont.  But the nice thing is, the theory is changing.  This article was written in 2001 and it looks at Livestock guardians mostly in Europe.  It's a good article for you to read.

What are you going to run your guardians with?

And the other breed you were trying to think of was probably a Marrema.

Here is a list of the most common LGDs.

I didn't mean to sound like I was questioning you on how many dogs you want to adopt ! I'm so sorry if it came out that way , I was just curious if you did adopt Garrett , and that's so wonderful that you still are !!! Wow , I want to come live with you , I'd have a gazillion more animals if my hubby would allow it  ;D
