I hate e-collars.   Ask your vet for a cervical collar.  It's just a stiff collar that wraps around his neck with velcro that won't let him bend his neck around.  He'll be able to eat and drink but not bend around to investigate the wound. 

I agree that one lick will not budge the staple.  Just keep reinforcing the 'leave it'.  Maybe give him a stuffed bone or something he loves to chew on to keep him interested in what's in front of him, not what's behind him!!

There is a cream to deter licking. I purchased it at the vets ,when Rosie got spayed. It is called Variton cream. You put in around the area that was sutured/stapled but not directly on the incision site. It really worked for us. It also detered her brothers from licking her site as well.
