Finally we got our leo puppy
« on: November 15, 2006, 11:43:50 pm »
Hi
We finally picked up our leo puppy after waiting for over a year, she is just over seven weeks old.

She takes no notice of my other dogs , and they are slowly getting used to her  :)

I do have a question or two if anyone can help please.

1.... what age do you suggest i get her vaccinated i have read its not good to have them done early , but also read its not good to leave it to late .

2.. does anyone have a guide or chart to the approx weight a leo should be at different ages .

thanks alot .
Amber our liver spot dalmatian passed away after 14.5 years r.i.p.
Ben our 9 year old rescue golden retriever
Callie our 18 month old Leonberger.
Troy our 8 week old leonberger.

Oh my gosh! She is a doll and a half!!  I'm not sure about what age, but I have very strong feelings of getting them as soon as possible... Please post more pictures of you girl!  ;D

At 9 or 8 weeks Lucah got his first round DHPP and wormed. He got two more rounds of DHPP every 3 to 4 weeks after that as well as another worming.

He got a bordetella at 14 weeks and again at 16 weeks.

Finally he got the rabies at 16 weeks.  They told me that large breeds should try and hold off on the rabies until then so that they don't overdose on it since they will get another one in a year or so.

You, of course, should check with your vet for vaccinations that are specific to your area.  Some vaccines we thought we would need weren't needed since we live in Southern California.

Your puppy is really cute...sorry I don't have a size chart for you.

OH, what a sweetie!  I just want to reach through my screen and give her a big hug! Congrats on your puppy. I have tried to find similar sizing charts for Saints with no luck. As far as vaccinations go, I got Bella's done at 8, 11, 13 and 16 weeks.  I think for safety reasons a first set is important early, but I was told that Mom's antibodies pretty much fight off and wipe out the first set, which is why it's important to go no more that three weeks before getting the next. Don't know how true that is though.

CONGRATS on your little Leo girl - she is beautiful! ;D

As for the shots, the breeder we got Kate from recommended what she would need to us.  I have the papers at home and can let you know if you'd like?

As for growth charts etc, I learned really quickly that it's hard to follow them.  Every Leo is different and it's hard to say what's "normal" growth.  Just my opinion but the first chart I came across scared me because it said Kate should have been a lot larger than she was at the specific age I was measuring/weighing her at.  Later I found out that the chart was based on a male (not female) Leo as it had stated.  So - I stayed away from there.

Is your current vet familiar with giant breeds?  I would recommend finding one that is (if your's isn't) because our vet gave us a good indication of how Kate's growth was going and continues to today!

Now - we want more pictures!!! ;D

Oh, my!!!  She is dangerously cute!  I've sworn off puppies but the Leos sure make it tough to stick to my decision!

First of all, congrats on the new puppy! Adorable! :)

The rule of thumb my vet told me to follow for giant breed puppies is that you want them to gain about 3lbs a week

Looks just like our new puppy we picked up from the shelter a few months ago.

Bentley was 14lbs at 8 weeks and has grown 3 pounds a week on average since. He is a free feeder but we do watch how much he eats and make sure he is not a goobler of food.

Great dog and companion!

Rodney

PS. He is the smaller of the two! LOL
