Top Training/Behavior Books - Must Haves
« on: December 28, 2006, 12:16:42 pm »

I have been seeing so many questions lately regarding behavior, communicating with our canines, and understanding how to show them what we want, I thought I would post here all of my top recommendation s :

You cannot go wrong with anything from Patricia McConnell but these are must haves:

The Other End of the Leash
For the Love of a Dog
She also offers specific training guides for specific behavioral issues, including reactive dogs and fearful dogs:  raining.com/" target="_blank">http://www.dogsbestfriendt raining.com/

Pat Miller:  The Power of Positive Dog Training

Jean Donaldson:  The Culture Clash

Ian Dunbar: Many resources and must haves

Excellent recommendation s!!!

We received "For the Love of a Dog" for Christmas.
There are so many books available regarding training and behavior with many, many opinions. Raising a strong willed independent gal like Cirra can be quite a challenge and having many ideas and suggestions has been very helpful.  Patience and a sense of humor are most important.  She has just turned two and starting to grow up.  Since our Big Paws are so large it seems that we can sometimes forget that they are still "puppies" until 2 - 3 years.

Here are a few other book suggestions:

Excel-erated Learning - Pamela J Reid
How Dogs Learn - Mary Burch and Jon S Bailey
On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals - Turid Rugaas
Outwitting Dogs - Terry Ryan
So Your Dog is Not Lassie - Betty Fisher and Suzanne Delzio
Bones Would Rain from the Sky - Suzanne Clothier
The Rosetta Bone - Cheryl Smith

Any other suggestions?

I read "The Other End of the Leash" and thought it was very insightful. It was more of a "why" rather than "how" type of book. She explains a lot about animal behavior and differences between humans and canines and why those differences can cause problems.

I definetly have to increase my library.
They all sound worth the read.

Has anyone every read any of
Carol Lea Benjiman
I like her a lot, very common sense solutions
Mother Knows Best
and the last one I got was
Dog Training in 10 Minutes

I only got that last one because it was by her,and of course it refers to 10 minutes at a time. Not totally training your dog in ten minutes. But it does have some very simple things to do that make a huge difference in our relationship with our fur kids.
The trick as always with anything we do is being consistant
and DO IT.

Tricia and the fur kids

Ahhh...Don't Shoot the Dog and Turid Rugaas are also great but I didn't see them as "core" books to start.....but absolutely worth the read.  As a great complement to Turid's "Calming Signals", you should also check out Patricia McConnell's DVD on her seminar regarding reading animal behavior - EXCELLENT and so necessary for the mass public.

On another note, I agree that Patricia's Other End of the Leash is a great explanatory book of the difference between human and canine and explaining their behavior.  If you want her "how to" then check out her how to short books such as "Puppy Primer", "Feisty Feido", "Pack Management" et al.  All available depending on the behavior need or canine phase of life.
