Weird spot
« on: April 18, 2007, 03:37:11 pm »
I have found these weird spot on Lily's elbow. At first I thought it was just dirty but when I looked closer I realized it's not. It has brown flaky skin on the bottom of every hair. It doesn't look like a hot spot nor like allergy. I have never seen anything like these before. Have you???
Thank you in advance

It's probably a calus, so really thick skin from laying on the floor.

Hey there. Yukon has the same brown fur spots on his elbows. I haven't looked at the base of the hair to see what the skin looks like but I assumed it was normal. I've seen many Pyrs with the same dark areas on the elbows. It's not as evident in Yiska, but she may have it too.

Yep, looks like a callus.

If your dogs prefer to lie on cool cement or tile floors, any hard surfaces, they can develop calluses.  If you have a carpeted house or your dogs are couch potatoes they won't get them.

My dog stays outside on the deck or sleeps on her bed. I don't  see how she could develop this "callus". Could she?

I know that elbows and belly hair get dark sometime. But the base of it definitely doesn't look healthy! That is my big concern

Maybe run her by the vet to take a look? I know I hate going to the vet unless I absolutely have to.

I'll go try to look at their elbows now and see if I see anything similar.

They are both so freakin rowdy right now. I looked but saw pink skin. I'll look closer when they pass out. :D
