eating dirt

Mt friend has a 5 year old Dane who has just started eating dirt.  She said that he's eating A LOT of dirt.  I did a little research and found that this can be caused by PICA.  Does anyone know what this is or if there are any supplements you can give the dog to help?

Never heard of dog eating alot of dirt. Although, I did once give my sister a mouthful and told her it was candy. Hehehe! I was such a mean big sister at times!
