Video of the limp Today
« on: September 07, 2007, 05:34:51 pm »
I took this to show how much worse he is. After hubby got back from the vet yesterday and I was quite livid and upset talking to him, he was so calm and told me, 'well I wouldn't say he is WORSE, but he hasn't improved'..I swear if he doesn't see that he is worse, he is blind. Anyway, it angered me because he tends to listen to people TOO much if you know what I mean and they shape his thinking. Anyway, after all the talk from the Dr.'s of saying, his x-rays are perfect and he doesn't react to pain, was perfectly cooperative for the positions to take the films, blah blah.. he started thinking maybe it's really nothing after all. I hate when he gets that way. I just don't want him thinking we can just ignore this and give it time. He said the vet did say we can just wait it out more and see if it goes away. >:(

Not to rant but I guess I just did. Any of you that saw the first video weeks ago, can see the change I am sure. And maybe you can see it resembles the movement that your dogs had when they had a certain issue.

How sweet is my boy. Makes me more sad cause he's such a good pupper. He always gives that paw to you to hold it, probably feel good to not have to hold it up for once.

Big hugs to Yukon.  I never saw the first video but I just watched it along with this one and the poor boy isn't even really using his leg in today's video.  At least the portion I saw on it.  I wish I had some great advice but I got nothing.  So lots of good healing vibes headed your way.

Well he might be limping more due to the x rays. I'd crate rest him. Let him out to pee/poop/eat etc but rest him to prevent any further injury to whatever is going on with him.

At least til you can meet with the other vet, sounds like that might only be a couple days.

This is pretty much how he has been limping since I thought he got worse, but today he's holding it up more than he has been in between.. so yeah, maybe he is extra sore.

is he limping on the front paw?
well exrays would show all the most important things like fractures, breaks, ligament ruptures and bone cancer growths.  get a second opinion though.  getting worse and "not improving" is a lot different.  that is a lot worse.

I am thinking that he is very sore from the vet manipulating it around yesterday for the exams and xrays. They have aggravated whatever is wrong with his poor leg. Gosh...I wish you could get an answer. Sending healing thouhts to poor Yukon :-*

they took exrays of the shoulder, didn't they?  an orthopedic can get a good idea of what's wrong without an exray. the exray is for verification really.  i'd go see someone else.  that would bother me.

I have been repeatedly watching the videos.  They play like Pyrs do, roughly at times.  I do not see active toe extensor movement in the right paw.  He moves the shoulder readily frankly, when non-weightbearing.  I am concerned about C7-C8 region of his neck.  His wrist flexor tendons in the front leg seem to be tightening, losing ROM because the extensors do not look to be functioning properly.  I would gently let him stretch like he did in the video with his legs/wrists straight out.  Encourage any toe spreading versus balling up of the foot, and do not force the wrist straight but encourage him to straighten it in non-weight bearing.  These may be sequela of a neck injury with a disc component.  I know-too many suggestions.  Just worried that, until seeing the specialist, he is losing function in the limb.  He is throwing the wrist forward, not controlling it, from what I can see.  I would supervise yard time if not on leash, and not let him play for now.  Images should include the cervical spine if to be CT scanned, etc.  Just my thoughts on his movement patterns, trying to help.  What meds have they given?

Ohhh, that limp does look quite a bit worse and he's so sweet that I just want to hug him.   :-*   :(  I agree with Denise, something looks kind of odd about how he is holding that sore leg, too.  I also noticed in the video that his paw seems curled and when he was giving you the paw, his bad leg was curving toward his left, as opposed to giving you a straight paw.  He may be clenching his toes due to pain.  That is one of the ways that we watched Halley for pain (I'd forgotten this until now) was that she'd "cup" her paw, but the curve to the leg is puzzling.  I'm sure that he is must be more sore today from the vet exam (as well as the walking in & out of the vet, car ride, etc.) but still, that limp looks so much worse than the early videos that I saw.  Also, the way that his leg is curving is so different than how Halley held her leg with a tumor in the proximal humerous (just slightly below the shoulder joint).  She held her leg up, but it was straight, not curved.  I don't know anything about spinal problems in dogs, what Denise said does sound really intriquing and I'm sure that a ortho vet could look at that, too.

Stick to your guns, Kristina!  I know that no one wants to think that he's getting worse (just "not improving" does sound better  :-\) but it sure looks a lot worse to me, too and you have the videos to document the change.  I would definitely get him to a specialist ASAP.  That fact that yesterday's vet doesn't know that a Pyr almost literally *won't* show pain by crying, etc. makes me concerned, too.  If he/she is waiting for Yukon to cry to recognise that he's in pain, then he's going to put that sweet boy through a lot of unnecessary suffering.   :'(  I wonder if the ortho vet would find the series of UTube videos enlightening, too.  Often they just see the dogs walking for a short distance in the office.  So it might be helpful for him/her to see the progression of the limp over time and how he has been walking and moving his right leg (giving you the paw), etc. when in his home environment.

Gosh, Okay. I don't even know what exactly they x-rayed yesterday, I haven't look at them. Hubby said they looked at his shoulder, elbow and wrist? I know what you're saying about him not flexing his toes..I noticed that weeks ago, he would just not even attempt to use it, flex it, nothing..like it was just closed and limp, and that had concerned me. They prescribed him a weeks worth of Deramaxx on Aug 20th..but I only gave it for 3 days because he wouldn't stop drinking excessively and needing to pee every 45 mins. They told me it wouldn't cause that, and didn't say anything about continuing it and never gave him anything else.

Good, well maybe it will calm down soon since they aggrivated it. I feel so terrible for him and I'm scared to death honestly, scared he's going to be permanently damaged from this or something. I'm going to have to wait until Monday to call them back about the appt since they never called me back today and are closed now. And HOPE they can get us in the following week when it's hubbys day off. Nothing worse than waiting.

poor guy, how can someone not see that somethings wrong  :(  it's amazing how you can he's in pain but he still wants to love on you (and be loved) so bad.  i guess most all dogs are like that, but it still amazes me.  i sure hope you can get him in soon, and that it's going to be somewhat easily fixed!

I wonder if going to a animal chiropractor may help find the reason. It really helped with Puck--he had a disc problem that was affecting hid back leg. Making it weak and wobbly.
