bully sticks??
« on: October 31, 2007, 10:23:41 am »
Hi everyone,

I am in search of a healthy alternative to rawhides for Jenny to chew on. She loves to chew, and I want something that will last more than 5 minutes and that is, of course, good for her. I have heard of these bully sticks, and wondered whether anyone here has used them or knows if, in fact, they are good for dogs to chew?? Or does anyone have another suggestion?? Thanks!

We love bully sticks and they are great!!! They last for about 20 min to a day (it depends in what kind of chewy mood we are  ;D)  BUT gosh they stink, LOL!

Phelan is an avid Bullystick destroyer, LOVES them. The tips i've found so far...The lighter ones don't smell as bad, don't get the smoked ones as they smell the worst, the braided ones take the longest to chew through and they are IMO much better than rawhide. I take Phelan's away from him when he's halfway through just to ensure less gas outbreaks :o

Call me immature, but I have such a hard time buying those.

;D  Same here, Tina.  I've caved in and bought them a few times.  The response?  Our dogs love them, my husband and sons get a pained look on their faces, and they make me faintly nauseous.  ;D  It's funny how the gross-er (is that a word?  :-\) it is to us, the tastier it is to our pups.   ::)  ;D

Oh my god. Miles is DEFINITELY a big fan of bully sticks...AS AM I! They keep him busy for hours! The only thing I don't like is that they smell HORRID and they turn his snow white paws BROWN. I get the 12 inch THICK bully sticks. They last the longest. The ones that he ate the quickest were the Braided ones. A 12 inch braided bully (that cost me 7 bucks!) was gone in literally 15 minutes!

We love bully sticks, although my husband and stepson cringe when I bring them out. ;D  Along that same line are the esophagus things (moo tubes, I think they're called), I think by Merrick. Super gross and crunchy, but well-liked. The only other chew-worthy things my guys get are Merrick Knuckles, which are pricey but last a week or so. They stink too, but my pups adore them. In fact, it's the one thing that Nakita will drop in my lap to share (it's that special).  ::)

Our pups are huge bully stick fans!  Oh the reaction from people when they ask, "What is that?"  Well you really wouldn't believe!  I think only dog people can relate that this animal body part gives our dogs so much pleasure, (no pun intended) and they can digest them easily, plus they don't tend to chew on your shoes, furniture etc...  I say, " they can have all the bully sticks they want!"  Klondike, our biggest guy, can eat a whole one in a matter of 30 minutes most times.  The other 3 pups can have them last for a few days unless Klondike hunts them down.

Ever since my last stint as a vegetarian (I've been on and off for years), I can't bring myself to get these things!!  Especially pig ears, since we have two potbellied pigs!  I don't miss cow hooves either.....the y reeked too, and I was always stepping on one with bare feet in the middle of the night...OUCH!!

The thing that keeps Bodhi busier and happier than anything else is - weirdly enough - a 99 cent dishtowel! LOL!  He LOVES them....flips them around and pushes them around with his nose like he is dusting the floor.  He'll play with one for hours.  I have a STRANGE dog.....hahaha ha...

My crew loves bully sticks.  I haven't seen the bully bites so I do the same thing that Stella does and get a large one and saw it into pieces.  I must be one of the only people who doesn't think they stink but then again I'm a zookeeper so that could be the reason.  Mine also love the cow hooves, trachea, and I found some bone steaks (knuckle bones and leg bones that had been cut in cross sections with meat still attached) and that was a big hit.

Yes, I'm a vegetarian and definitely struggle with this issue. I can appreciate that dogs are truly carnivores, but the whole factory farming thing and how animals are treated is very disturbing to me and I don't want to support it, but I also want to find Jenny something that she likes to chew. An ethical dilemma!!

To me, bully sticks are to dogs what ice cream or cheesecake is to humans.  Yummy to some, sure (cough, choke  ;D), but not truly necessary.  I'm sure that everyone here on BPO, whether vegetarian (like me  ;)) or not are careful to be sure that we all give our dogs a healthy diet (with meat, of course), love, and lots of fun things to play with.  We may differ sometimes about what we give our dogs for fun, but we all give them everything that they need.  Ummm "sticks", ears, hooves, noses, etc. don't bother some, but they do bother others.  I just figure that it's differences like these that make the world go 'round.  BTW, my hubby (who is an omnivore  ;)) said that it's just flat gross that I compared a bull's body parts to cheesecake.  Ha, ha!  All these years and he still cracks me up.   ;D  :-*

Really, a cheesecake?  I was thinking more of a red velvet cake!   ;)

Red velvet cakes are very good.  Okay, well every cake is very good.  Red velvets are one of my favorites.

Here is a link to a recipe that is close to my grandmother's recipe for red velvet cake.

Sorry to threadjack.
