Ear Cropping: I need some advice!
« on: January 10, 2008, 05:11:25 pm »
My Amstaff puppy got his ears cropped about 5 or so weeks ago. They stand straight and I thought they were done being taped. However, whenever he gets alert, his ears curl in towards eachother. (See pictures) Is there a specific way of taping that will fix this sort of problem? Or, since they are good when relaxed, is this the best I can ask for? Any help would be great!

First of all, he's gorgeous!!

2nd, are you going to show him? If your plans aren't to show him then I wouldn't even worry about it.

He is quite the studly looking dog. There is nothing that is a proven commodity in trying to correct ears that have been cropped. As alluded to in the previouse post, if you are not going to show him I would not deciate that much effort to chaging things.  If it is an issue you can bring him in and get him reset but there is no gaurante it will do anything.

I would continue to tape them.  Even if you aren't showing the pup, I dont think its fair to you or the pup to have gone through the crop to just let them flop, not this early at least.  I'd talk to the vet that did the surgery and see what he/she says, and just continue to tape/set them like you did before.

I'm sure others that have gone through a crop will post with some ideas to get them to stand.

As for your pup...ADORABLE!!  What a good looking dog.  I just love staffies :)

Thanks! I got him with ears cropped so I can't talk to the  vet. Its just that they stand right when he's relaxed...its how he holds them when he's excited...I dunno. Thanks though!

Aww thanks! Yeah, I'm going to try in show him just for fun. His parents are champions so, even though his color isn't favorable, its worth a shot? lol

I would like to show him so I will retape and pray that it will eventually help! I just worry the taping I'm doing won't correct this specific issue...Thanks!

If you dont think the tapping you are doing is working, talk to the vet that did the crop (your breeder will give you this info) or contact your breeder for info on what to do.  They will be able to answer your questions and can maybe even help hands on.

At this moment, I do not trust either the breeder or her vet as (from past advice) I do not think they will give me a better answer than someone on here could. Thanks anyways! I have retaped them and hopefully it will work.

Thanks! Na, my vet doesn't crop as there are very few here that do in Arizona. But, I'll see what I can do. Thank you

how are you taping do you have anything keeping them in shape, or are they just taped? depending on the way you tape will also change the set on the ear. ;)
