Home needed for Pitbull
« on: January 19, 2008, 09:00:50 pm »
Need advice on how to safely place my brothers pitbull.

My brothers body was found 01/10/2008, he had been in a snowmobile accident in front of his home and stumbled into his garage and collapsed. He was 41. His pitbull was upstairs in his crate. The neighbors found my brother three days later :( I have his dog. He is the sweetest thing! He is not neutered so I am having that done. He was very thin from being in his crate with no food or water but he is eating now and gaining weight.
He is good with my kids, he seems fine with other dogs (non agressive). He touched noses with my cat and the cat ran away and he didnt react. He can sit, speak, lay down, is learning to heal. He is crate trained so doesnt have accidents.
He is a beautiful dark brindle.....
I ahve two dogs, one of which is a 4 mo old femal Border Collie which is why I cant give him run of the house with my two dogs yet.
Where can I post or get the word out? I dont want fighters or weirdos getting my brothers dog. He was everything to him.
Hes only 1 year old :(

They will not allow me to post him until his neuter is complete (completely understand). I will NOT put him in a shelter. OF all things he needs is to be stuck in a cage with a cement outdoor after all he has been through.

He will live with me until I can find a place for him.

Thank you for the condolences, its been the hardest thing I have ever dealt with. I am trying to stay focused and get things settled for his dogs sake and mine.

Unfortunately there are so many pitt bulls and they have been given such a bad rap. There really is an over population of them. Yesterday I was at the city pound and they were the breed that took over the pound I would say 80% of the dogs were pitt or pitt mix. I have rehomed many dogs and pitt bulls are tough to place you must know the breed just like any other dog. If you can hold out your best bet would be to ask people you know that you have this wonderful pitt and need to find a loving home for him place a flyer up at your vet if they will let you. Do not be in a hurry to give him to anyone make sure the person you place him with understands if it doesn’t work out they are to return the dog to you and only you. Let them know you will check on the dog to make sure he is working out. This way they know they know you care about the dogs well being. I have a rescue pitt and he is the biggest love bug he could care less about the mail man or UPS person he loves kids and car rides. He has never known anything but love and that is the way it should be! Hope this helps! Marina

I'm so sorry to hear about your brother.

It sounds like his dog is well trained and well socialized that will help in finding a good home for him.  Getting him neutered is also good so he won't be used as a stud.  And he's still pretty young.  You have alot going for you despite the fact that there are so many pits looking for homes right now.

I also think working w/i your own and your brother's social circles is the best way of finding a good home.  Perhaps a friend of your's or your brother's knows of someone looking for a pit.  If that doesn't work out then I would go the route of using a rescue to go thru.

Good luck in finding him a great home he sounds like an awesome example of the breed, and handsome to boot.

Neicy, I am so glad you posted on this site. These people are wonderful and caring. Another friend of mine got me hooked on this site almost 2 years ago when Molly started losing her hair. They provided me with all kinds of suggestions.
Neicy and I work very closely in the horse world. I have seen her work miracles when it comes to saving a horse. She is a kind person with a ginormous heart. I am blessed to have her as a friend.
I know with all of your strength, she will get through this sudden loss and will be able to find the right home for this adorable dog.
thank you

Thank you for all the suggestions and the positive feedback Deb.

I am not having much luck so far but havent posted him on the rescues yet. His D day is Feb 6th so hopefully after that we can start posting him on more sites.

I am worried about finding the loving caring home that will baby him the way my brother wanted him to be. Lets just say my brother registered another vehicle because his commuter didnt have air conditioning for his DOG!

You know what is amazing, I posted him on Petfinder.com and I am getting hundreds of emails. The kinds we want to adopt your "pet", we golly me I should ship my "pet" out right away oh and get that cashiers check to me pronto. Emails from the UK stating they would like to know my adoption price and when they can get my "Pet"

OK first clue if they dont know what the heck they are adopting then they are an idiot!

Do people really fall for these things??? UGH!

I am so sorry to hear about your brother.  That must be the hardest thing to go through.  I lost my parents, but none of my siblings yet, Thank God.  As far as his dog, a lot of our local vet offices will let you post a notice there of a dog needing to be rehomed.  The local groomers, dog food shops and doggy daycares do as well.  That way it is a client of theirs and they would be able to tell you something about the person.  Also, they would know of any of their clients who have recently lost a dog and might be looking.  I wouldn't do the online route, simply because it is so impersonal and hard to know who is responding.  It sounds like you have a great boy there who deserves a really fantastic home.  Good luck

I agree, so far all I have gotten are spam mails nothing serious. I am doing word of mouth but its difficult to do when I am not home to get phone calls being so busy right now :(

Any ideas to change his name??? My brother named him Killer because he is such a baby. I want to keep it close to Killer but I am not having much luck.

Kids said Miller but that sort of faded away. Its hard to change his name with my brothers death so close still. Perhaps once things have settled more.....its just plain hard right now and he has gone through so much in such a short time yet he is still learning from us. He now heals on a leash and listens so well to us.

We all like Miller too.....I think it has more to do with respect for my brothers wishes that keeps me from changing it. He called him that because in his words "hes so much of a baby I had to call him something mean".
He really is a wimp at most things, never offers to snap or bite etc. Hes just a sweet dog.....not anything like I imagined a pitbull to be. I know I know but you hear horror stories of them snapping or going into rage etc....so far none of that.

Gave him a bath last night and he stood rock solid, he LOVED it :)

I am so sorry for your loss. I wish I could take this little pup as I am an avid Pit Bull lover but unfortunatly I can't. I would love to hear maybe aftering having her for a while that you would want to keep her but if not I hope you find a loving home for her/him!! Good luck!!
