Hi, new with size question
« on: January 28, 2008, 12:56:33 am »
Hi, I just discovered this forum.  It seems great!  I think I will be frequenting it often  :)

My boyfriend and I just got a puppy last week from the shelter, which we named Cooper.  He is a totally sweet and all he wants to do is lick everyones faces!  According to the shelter he is a 9 month old mix and that is about all they could tell me.  At his first weigh in this week, he weighed 78 lbs.  Everyone we talked to says they see a different breed in him, which is great.  We have been searching all sorts of different breeds, but can't seem to figure out his mix either.  Not that we would ever reject him because of his breed, but we are just curious about how much his mature weight might be and wondering if there are any particular health concerns we should be worried about/especially on the look out for that are associated with certain breeds.

I'm going to post a picture, which I'm sorry if it is sideways (on my computer it is correct, but whenever I upload it online, it isn't  >:( ).  Any ideas on his mix or his possible mature weight?

Any help/comments would be fantastic!

Hi & welcome.  Congratulation s, it looks like you've adopted an adorable sweetie!  ;D  :-*  I love his big brown eyes, white muzzle & the blaze on his forehead.  I really don't know about his mix, but his coloration looks kind of like a beagle to me, but he's much bigger, so I don't really know.  In any case I'm sure that he's going to be a great addition to your family.

I second the lab thought.  His head has many attributes of labs.  It also looks like there is some kind of hound in the mix as well.  EIther way he is a good looking boy.

Thanks for all the great, welcoming replies.  I think Cooper has some lab in him as well, but whatever else he is is a giant mystery to me!   He's a cutie and one of the sweetest dogs I've ever met and he learns so fast in terms of training.  Now if only we can get over the hump of separation anxiety he will be perfection!

I was thinking maybe some boxer too!  And in the top pic he does look a bit labbish!!  Separation anxiety sucks, try to keep everything consistent for awhile.  Have a routine when you leave and when you come home.  Most important, when you do come home and he is ooooohhhhhh soooo excited!!!!!  ignore him for a little bit.  Yes, it's pretty hard to do :D :D  I had to do that with my first GSD and after awhile his separation anxiety got quite a bit better.   Good luck, post more pics, and welcome!!!

Actually, mystery solved (I'll address that in a separate post... it is a long bizarre story).  He is half pure bred Akita, half pure bred Tennessee Walker Coonhound and he is only 7 months old.
