Valis is sick...
« on: February 06, 2008, 10:24:12 pm »
The newest member of our family, Valis- a husky wolf hybrid, has hip displaysia.  Hes not even 2 months old!!!!  I contacted the breeders and they are willing to take him back or trade him out but im so sad!!!  :-[  :'(  Normally i would keep him and give him the best life he could have but we have hard wood floors and i have a Pyr that loves to play.  Neither of those are good for a puppy with degenerative hips...I dont know what to do. We have only had him for 6 days but im very attached but i dont feel as though i could give him a longer life, the one that he deserves.  Am i just making excuses?  Am i heartless?  Should i just move into a better house for the young one?  I am so sad...  :'(

I am SO sorry about Valis :'(.  What a terrible thing to happen to any dog, let alone a baby.  I'm not much help when it comes to the question of giving him up to the breeder.  I guess I would have to consider the quality of life he would have at your house and how it would compare to QOL at the breeders.  Do you have the financial resources to care for a pup for what could be several years with the kind of disabilities that Valis will have?  There are special things you can get for him, little wheelchairs.  I saw one a few weeks ago at the dog park, and that baby could move in it!  It brought tears to my eyes.

Whatever decision you make, I know that you will make it out of compassion and love, you are not heartless, the fact that you are so torn about this is proof of that.  Please give Valis a kiss on his little puppy nose for me, I hope that whatever happens he gets to live to the fullest of his potential.  And a big hug for you, this is not an easy thing to have to deal with by any stretch of the imagination.   :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

The only reason i would would take him back to his previous owners is because of his age.  If he were older i know that he would be somewhat ok, but to be so young and already have problems, i cant support his growing hips with my great pyr (who loves to play, no good with hips) and hard wood floors.  He cant even jump up on our 18" couch!  :'(  We have never seen him jump at all  :-[  He is going to have a life of pain no matter what i do, i feel though this house will only make his hips worse...  :'(  I took him to the vet to get his shots and get him micro chipped.  The vet is an old friend and hes very straight forward has also had big dogs his whole life (used to be a large animal vet up north).  He took one look at his hips and knew.  We talked about it for awhile but in the end he told me it was my decision.  Thanks...what kind of choice do i have!!!  This situation sucks!! I am so sad  :'( :'( :'(  Im lost...

Whatever you do, we're with you.  It's a decision you have to make yourself, but you'll get nothing but support from us.  ;)

I'm so sorry to hear about Valis. Having the breeder care for him may be best for him in the long run. The breeder should have more experience in caring for dogs with special needs. And HD is definitely something serious that requires special care and attention.

We'll be thinking of you.

Aaaw, that is just hearbreaking. I hate to sound cold, but honestly, you paid for what you thought was a healthy pup, and he's...not. The HD must be extremely severe for it to be so evident at two months with no xrays. I hate to say it, but as heart breaking as it would be, I'd take him back. I'd ask for a refund, though, and not get another pup from that breeder. There is evidently a problem there. Oh, it's so so awful. You're in a terrible position, but you need to do what is right for you. All good thoughts...

I am so sorry to hear about Valis. I have been in your shoes and it is a very tough decision to make. We had a rotti pup and by the time he was 6 months he had HD very bad. We were all set to do an operation(which would have been the first of many) and the vet called and said that he couldn't do the surgery b/c the HD had progressed since the last xrays were taken. After talking to our own vet, the specialist and another vet and our breeder. It was decided that Hogan would 99% not live a pain free life and would be around 2 yrs by the time the last surgery would be done.We returned him to the breeder and she even took him to her vet  just to confirm the diagnoses With a very heavy heart we deciced that he would be put to rest on her property.  :'( It broke my heart but deep down we knew it was the only pain free way.

The breeder offered our money back or another puppy. Then Puck was returned to her because of a divorce. So at a  year old he came to live with us and he has been a blessing ever since. :)

My heart is with you in this situation and I wish you all the best.

My husband and i both thank you for all of your support and information.  He is back with the breeders and very happy to be so.  I guess that is the thing that makes it all ok, hes young enough that his time here can be forgotten and he can enjoy what time he has with his mom and "people family".  It is a sad moment in the beginning of my new marriage but as they say, what doesnt kill us only makes us stranger.

Thank you all from the bottoms of our hearts  :'( :'(

Aw, I really feel sad for you guys. Is it totally inappropriate for me to have giggled when I read your post saying "What doesn't kill us only makes us stranger?"  :-*

No, it wasnt inappropriate, that is the point.  Some things in life dont really make us stronger.  They add issues and baggage and other strange things.  So, i believe that the things that dont kill us make us STRANGER  ;)
