winterized dog house pictures
« on: February 11, 2008, 10:52:22 am »
Hi everyone, A couple people have asked me to post some pictures of the house we built outside for Marley.
His house is in a fairly large pen(basically is only in here over night). We built it about a foot off the ground so he has a ramp to get in. We put in a plexiglass window and set up a solar light over the enterance way to the dog house that charges all day and has motion sensor for the night (he's spoiled  :))
We created an L shape for wind blockage and added a tip out in the front for shade in the summer and from the rain and snow in the winter. It isn't fully painted yet so looks a little ugly on the outside but all he cares about is how comfy it is. We covered the inside of the sleeping area with pine shavings that he spreads all over..as you can see in the pictures. Let me know if you have any other questions ie: material used etc..

Cheers!

BTW the burlap on the fencing is only for the winter to help block the blowing snow. We take it down in the summer... It does help with his barking I have noticed... but looks horrible. ;)

Ha ha.. yes he is.. As much as I wish he loved being inside where it is warm with me.... I give him the world were he is most content..outsi de!
In total it took approximately 2 weekends in the fall to complete the structure and pen. Then another weekend in the beginning of winter to fully insulate it.

Wow! All he needs is a TV and an alarm clock and he's set!!

That's a great living arrangement. Marley is a lucky boy.

Oh my goodness!  That's one impressive structure you've built there!  Marley is one lucky boy!  I've got a couple of questions though regarding materials used.  First, did you use Pressure Treated Lumber for the entire house or just the floors?  I ask because the house I built for Naja only has the Pressure treated wood on the floor.  Also, approx how much did it cost you to make?  When I did mine cost was definately an issue so I couldn't do as much as I would have liked.  But any tips you might have to upgrades in the spring would be great!  How is it in the Summer for keeping cool?  I've got large vents in mine to help keep the air moving, but Naja still doesn't really like going in there in the Summer.   :) :) :)

That is a beauty!  Marley's house rocks!  We tried houses with the Mals and the Huskey  - but they preferred to be on top of them so we opted out - now they lay in the snow or all over the deck and sun themselves at 20 below- Well the huskey doesn't he prefers the sanctuary of the foot of my bed.  You would think northern breeds would prefer the outside - like Marley does - Nope - not mine - all 3 run the house  :D
