Spanish Mastiff (Mastin Español)
« on: April 27, 2005, 03:31:51 pm »
In another topic it was said, that the Spanish Mastiff is called Pyrenean Mastif
I would like to clarify a bit  ;)

The Spanish Mastiff (Mastín Español) and the Pyrenean Mastiff (Mastin del Pirineo) are two different breeds!

You might visit for more info:
The Pyrenean Mastiff Club Of America: http://www.pyreneanmastiff.org/index2.html
The Pyrenean Mastiff Club of Spain: http://www.cmpe.net/
The Spanish Mastiff Club of Spain http://www.aepme.org/

Both breeds are indeed adorable, but they are both true livestock guardian dogs with strong flock guardian instincts.

Spanish Mastiffs are intelligent, quite independent and they are capable to work (guard animals or territory) on their own.
They have been bred for centuries to guard the sheep in the mountains in Spain, and they are guard dogs by instinct, not by training.
They can have a will of their own, can be stubborn (in a sweet way), not easily obedience trained, and they can be heavy barkers, especially at night.
The breed is definitely not suitable for living in apartments or small backyards - they need space, and they prefer to be outdoor (have access to be outdoor when they want to).
They love their family, the children and other animals within the family, but can be rather dismissive of strangers (people and animals).
They are not especially dog aggressive, at least not on neutral grounds, probably on their own territory.

This is the basic character of the breed - of course there can be differences in characters from dog to dog, depending on blood lines, upbringing, socialization etc.

Sally, Thank you for that information, I will most definately try and educate myself on those breeds. I am a Bullmastiff and OEM person myself, but when working as professional groomer, I came in contact with other mastiffs, granted not a lot, but enough to know most of them are darlings. I will go on to these websites and get more information. It sounds real interesting

Thanks
