New puppy Great Dane Mastiff mix
« on: February 24, 2008, 06:37:34 am »
I already have 4 older dogs, just received this new puppy as a gift.  He is 8wks old and about 35lbs already!  I just want information on Giant dog breeds.  Feeding etc.  I want to make sure he has a long and happy life.  My labs have back and hip problems, both on medication, is there anything I can do to help avoid early onset?

The Vet. who sees our mastiffs says to feed a high-quality, all life stages kibble, not a puppy formula.  The puppy formulas cause the pup to get too heavy too fast which can make skeletal problems worse.

Got pictures?

He is on Iams puppy food for large breeds, but he likes the older dogs food which is pedigree.
I have pictures, but don't know how to add??

Welcome to the board! Can't wait til you post some pics of that big puppy!!! :)
I agree that nutrition is KEY to keeping your big paw healthy. Adult dog food worked really well for the pups I have raised, kept their growth rate slow and steady. Also you'll want to be careful not to take your pup on walks that are too long for those growing bones to handle. Rough exercise is best kept minimal for puppies who grow really fast like Mastiffs and Great Danes.

Best of luck! Um, pictures now! ;) ;D

i feed peyton (rottie/mastiff mix?) holistic eagle pack for large and giant breeds. she has tummy problems with even some of her treats and that is the ONE brand of food that doesn't make her tummy get upset. sometimes if money is tight, i switch to the different flavors of holitic eagle pack. they have salmon, duck and lamb. she likes them all. and they all like her!

there are alot of people on here who know the % of fats and stuff...you should get lots of advice!

one word...pics!
Your house isn't a home until you have made a bed for a dog.
