Harley had a heat stroke scare!
« on: August 08, 2005, 01:00:38 pm »
When Tim and I got home Friday we took the dogs for a walk to 2 different Dog parks. It was warm out but not too hot, we had plenty of water for them too. SO we set out to explore a new dog park close to our house. We took them to some trails in the woods and came across a ravine for them to play in. After about 30 min we left and set out to the other dog park we normally go to.(by car, with AC fully going, windows down and both there heads out the window.)  We were there mostly casually walking and training. Anyway we were there for about an hour and a half. When we got home I noticed Harley was not like herself. She didn't want to eat or drink. So I got out some ice cubes and held it while she licked it, I rubbed it on her nose a little. And she finally ate. I still kept a close eye on her and she still was very slow moving and her breathing was not right. She was panting very hard and sounded like she was wheezing. Tim moved her into the bedroom (cooler in the bedroom, we have to fans going in there) and we got the fan on her to cool her down and tim layed with her. after about 30 min her breathing returned to normal and she was fine. I called the vet the next day, described what happend and asked if it was asthma. They said no that it was from the heat, heat stroke, and when you notice that to take them out of the heat into a cool place and cool them down slowly, and make sure they drink plenty of water. It was sooo scary!!

Nina, that is really scary!  I am so glad that Harley is okay.  Ranger pants like a freight train when he is hot and I am always so worried abou that kind of thing...

It was so scary, it happend once before, it was the middle of the night and she was breathing like she was having an asthma attack. Now I know what it is though. And now we have 2 fans in our bedroom so that it is nice and cool in there.

it is soo true how fast dogs can heat up. And for those people that leave there dogs in the car, even with the windows down, for 5 minutes it is so dangerous. I read in the pet store a notice saying that your car can heat up 10 degrees in five minutes!!!

Nina, that is so scary. It is so hard to say what is too hot. There are days when I think that it really isn't too warm out and then I have to cut the walk short due to LOTS of panting. I am so glad that Harley was ok. It's a killer in the summer time if I have to run out somewhere in the car, both of the dogs love to come along, but even if I will only be the store for five minutes they can't come. Poor things don't understand...

She is doing much better today. We took Dibby and Harley for a walk in the the rain yeaterday, so it was nice and cool, for us and them  ;D. And now will only take them for walks in the late evening. Dibs is fine in the heat even with his Pyr coat, I think because it is white it reflects the sun and heat, Harley she is tan so it keeps the heat in and she gets hotter that he does.

Nina, pleae give Harley a big hug from us.  When Sugar Bear and Dixie get hot they love to get a homemade frosty paw.

FROSTY PAWS ICE CREAM

32 oz. vanilla yogurt
1 mashed banana or one large jar of baby fruit
2 T. peanut butter
2 T. honey

Blend all together and freeze in either 3 ounce paper cups or ice cube trays. Microwave just a few seconds before serving.

Most of the time I just freeze yogurt with peanutbutter in the center. I use the paper muffin  cups.
