I would try to switch to a food like Solid Gold that doesn't contain any wheat.  Food allergies can show up in the ears and anal glands
as the body tries to rid itself of the toxin.  I use Halo's ear wash-it's very gentle.  My vet also said to use isoprophl alcohol too on a cotton ball.
It dries the ear up if there is too much moisture. 
Evaluate your dogs diet and see what comes up.  Even the slightest bit of an allergen can set off a reaction.
