Instinct?

I'm sure many of you have experienced the zig-zagging dog when taking walks. You know, they have to walk inches in front of you crossing back and forth making it impossible to walk without tripping on them.

It's not bad when Syrus and Sophie are walking together. They press into each other side by side and do what I call the Elephant walk. But since taking Syrus solo these days he's making me nuts.

I got to thinking what would be the reason for doing this? I'm trying to come up with some primal instinct. Asserting leader of the pack so no other pack members can get in front? Trying to throw off some predator? No wait, they would be the predator. They enjoy the extra petting they get by tripping on them and falling into them? ;D

Any ideas?

I suppose this is why the heel command was invented. :D

Just clearing a path in front of you!  That way you won't trip over a random stick or pebble!
